Am not sure I have enough cahones to do the EGT myself. Was wondering whether anyone knows of a "really" good diesel shop who will be able to do a first class job for a reasonable amount of cash. Am willing to go as far as Richmond, Baltimore, DC, Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Frederick, etc. Draw a 100 mile radius around DC and I'm ok with that. I just need to know that they have done it before, know what I am talking about, have the expertise to do it right. Thanks.

Don't know of anyone but it's really a pretty easy project to take on. I was reluctant at first, but did mine and 3 others with no problem. Working on the new truck this weekend. You can search this forum and find pretty detailed instructions.

I was in a similar position as you... It took me like four months to drill the two holes in the roof for antenna mounts, and then I wasn't too sure about drilling a hole in a part of the engine (sort of) of my $49k (sticker) truck... but I did it and it was VERY easy... Follow the "Hoot Method" and make sure you have new, sharp bits (one small one, 1/8" or so for a pilot, then one the size recommended for the tap), and you'll have no problems.

When I looked at Hoot's pictures, it shows a flat spot on the passenger side exhaust manifold. When I look through all the stuff in my truck to the same exhaust, it appears to be round. So I am thinking, is mine a different exhaust? Am I looking at the right place? Can I drill into a round manifold and how does one get a good seal if the place to drill is round and not flat? I know that I need to remove the wheel and wheel fenders but first I need to build up my courage.

The tapered pipe-plug thread is what seals it, not bottoming out against a flat surface. That's why you don't run the tap in all the way to the bottom.

Not in DC, but close, check with:

High-Tech Auto&Truck Center
4007-D Westfax Drive
Chantilly, Va. 20151
703-968-6648

I have had quite a bit of work done there on my Jeep, as has many of my friends. They were going to do my EGT install, until I decided to tackle it myself. About 30min. from the district. Good luck.
