: Why do they lie? Exhaust Makers that is!

Since when is does a "down pipe" back become a "turbo back"? I ordered the Magnaflow turbo-back and was astonished (not really) to find what they called a down pipe and what I and the rest of the turbo motorsports hobby call a down pipe couldn't be any different. There definition is actually the "front pipe" if you will.

I thought it would be interesting to see if they actually included the real downpipe; (you know the one, it's connected to the turbo housing) in the kit. Well of course not there down pipe merely connected to the OEM turbo-"housing"-back downpipe.

Now before I get flamed for being stupid or something, I fully inderstand the difficuty of designing a 4" pipe the would even fit anywhere betwee the block and the firewall.

I just wish exhaust makers would call there products what they really are:
They say: "turbo-back" What it really is: "downpipe-back"
They say: "downpipe-back" What it really is: "3/4 or cat-back"

Topic has been discussed before, its just a coined word to use down pipe. You are correct in that an actual down pipe, is the part that comes from the turbo to connect to the exhaust.

I think there is no real precise word for it and because its a generic pipe, and no one currently makes one for specific turbo's that it is just convenient to call it that.

So a "front pipe" is the part that you use to get rid of the cat. It goes from a 4-bolt flange to the turbo down pipe.

RIGHT?

Someone who can draw should make a picture of the different types of pipe and the names that "should" be what they are.

Right on Bodysurfer. Even if someone made a turbo pipe it would be tough to put on. The bolts that hold the pipe on have been cooked pretty good. If you want to see just what is involved check out this photo. Later! Frank

DMAX_AZ,

We agree with you that's why we use the term "front pipe back" on all of our MBRP systems.

I read on Mike Tomac's website that he has an ATS 4" downpipe.... I was going to jus PM him to see if it was truely from the turbo down, but I figured he's a busy man and I thought I'd ask everyone....
DOES ANYONE MAKE AN ACTUAL AFTERMARKET "DOWNPIPE" YET? Meaning from the turbo outlet DOWN to the rest of your exhaust?
Thanks,
Jason

You are unhappy now ~ wait until you start getting old and they change names like condenser to capacitor or vicegrips to lock pliers etc. Got a new Audio Enhancement System to help me hear better. Nowhere in the literature did it refer to hearingaids. They called them hearing computers.

'There arose a new Pharoh who knew not downpipe' ;) Nothings static ~ always changing ~
