Can someone advise as to what is involved in changing the internal transmission filter? Once the pan is drained and dropped is the old filter simply lifted out and replaced or are special tools/fittings involved?

Any advice would be helpful.

You don't need to change the sump filter. Change the spin-on and you are done.

you have to install a different trans filter when you put on a deep pan, its the same filter but it has a longer pickup neck

Once you drain and drop the pan all you have to do is angle the old filter slightly to help pull the O-ring out. Easier done than said actually, its the first time ive ever even thought of changing the tranny fluid myself and had no problems.
