Will towing 98 2500 with auto in neutral with engine off damage the tranny?

best bet is to take the time undo 4 bolts and drop the drive shaft ive seen many vehicals hit the ditch when towed in nuetral cause of the heat frying stuff together so just drop the drive shaft save some heart break

Disconnect drive shaft.

Yes, because the drive shaft will turn the rear section of the transmission but the pump won't be turning so no lubrication will be be at the rear of the trans.

I think the truck has been towed 20miles or so. Is the tranny likely toast?

You can get away with a short distance.

no not likley. Is it a 4x4

It is a 4x4 with the push button shift.

read there is still a neut for some transfer cases. but that would give diffrent problems to tow. If you had to go any distance towing it on all 4s. You would slide under and un plug the ft diff actuator than turn the key on and push 2 & 4lo at the same time. With that done you could tow it with the trans in park.

Even those most often still have neut. By holding 2 &4lo at the same time. if you wanted to tow for any thing longer you would go under the front and un plug the fr diff actuator. then put the transfef case in neut leaving the trans in park.

The truck had no batteries so that was not an option. Just hoping I didn't damage the tranny.

it should not have hurt any thing. I have had times I went 20 miles at the end of a strap. that has been with many diffrent type of trans. None were any worse for it.
