: New 2009 Duramax Short Box Extended Cab DPF delete? Tranny safe horsepower?
the_shark 01-04-2009, 12:24 AM Hey guys,
New to diesel forum. Long story short. Just ordered a new 2009 duramax extended cab short box. Am literally going to order parts and have them here before the truck and hopefully get them on the same day. Looking for advice on an exhaust/chip/ intake that will give me the power and hopefully reliability i'm looking for. Things can get insanely cold up here in Canada and rediculously hot in the summers. Keeping this in mind, what type of combos have you heard of that work or you have and would know works? I'm looking for that nice whistle when I touch the accelorator. Not sure whether to go straight through or have a muffler. Well then that wasn't so short. Thanks for the read and your advise for me being a newb is very much appreciated. THANKS GUYS!
DSTRBD 01-04-2009, 12:52 AM Your best bet is going to be a stainless exhaust and either a PPE or Quadzilla Programmer. These combos have proven to be very reliable. The Quadzilla has settings from Stock up to 135 HP, PPE is up to 300 flywheel HP. If you want reliability, I would stay under 100 HP to be safe. There is plenty of reading here on both programmers and several different exhaust systems to choose from as well. Feel free to give me a call or shoot me a PM and we can go over details and pricing.

EFI live? Will work with deleting DPF? (Ya i'm full of dumb questions, never owned a diesel let alone a duramax) turbo back straight through or muffler?

Hello I have a 2007.5 also my first Diesel, I put on a magnaflow stainless turbo back system with the Qaud2 programer last month running the 90hp tune. Like it and it has been working up here in the cold so far. (currently -46 F):(
Since you're new I just thought I'd throw out some thoughts you may or may not be aware of. Doing those mods will most likely void your warranty. Many people are ok with that and if that's the group you're in, have fun! But, it sounds like you want to do the mods the day you pull your new truck off the dealers lot. I just thought I'd suggest you put at least a couple hundred miles on it first just to make sure there isn't something you want to have fixed under warranty before you loose that as an option. Once you're sure your truck has no initial defects in materials or workmanship, then mod away.

Ya, that seems to be the most popular tranny safe mod out there. Are you happy with the sound? Does it end up giving you that turbo whistle? Thanks for your input! and yes it's insanely cold up here!

I have read many forums on the internet about voiding warranty when you delete the DPF or add a chip. I have gone to a few different dealerships and 4 out of six said I may have a little trouble. At the other two they said it would be no problem to work on the truck if the modification I did, did not affect what was wrong with the truck. They even offered to do the delete for me as they have done a few. Of course they are not really allowed to recommend it but they said for any major problems like heads or my engine explodes...they would have no problems warrantying it. Further more I got this in writing which is pretty decent of them.. Definitely made me lean towards buying from them which i did. I am definitely going to put a few miles on it before the DPF delete or chip.. thank you

you have any warranty issues?
Sacket 01-04-2009, 12:04 PM Go with Turbo back if you are going to do anything IMOP. MBRP has a muffler that is the full diameter of the size pipe you are running. Sounds pretty good and easy to install if you do it yourself.
I use a PPE Hot Race LMM. Couple nice features on this is you can reset the tranny learning mode when you program the pickup. The other feature is it keeps the de-fueling when the vehicle shifts which is better on the tranny.
You questioned the EFI Live. What did you not understand on that? To delete the DPF you have to have a programmer reprogram your ECM (Truck Computer) so it is not looking for the two pressure sensors and O2 sensors that are on the DPF among other things.
Good luck

I've seen a few posts from users who seemed clueless as to why the dealer was giving them a hard time about the warranty after running a tune. Just wanted to bring it up in case you weren't aware. Sounds like you've already done your homework and congrats on finding a friendly dealer. Enjoy you're truck!

I'm in Alberta. I went with PPE and MBRP turbo back exhaust. NADP in Edmonton is where I got it all. They have a special version of the PPE dpf delete tuner which won't give you all the HP the Hot Race will but is alot cheaper. It's also nice to have support here in Canada. Nothing against the vendors on this site but it's nice to be able to see the person your asking questions to sometimes.

I just checked out EFI live. Have looked into PPE and it looks like a fairly popular chip for our type of applications as well as the Quadzilla Stealth 2. I like MBRP or RBP. Not sure if do go with a small muffler or straight pipe when deleting the DPF.

I'm insanely close to Edmonton and will check that out forsure! Thanks a lot!
JC1843 01-04-2009, 04:42 PM I suggest a TransGo Jr. for your 6 speed trans-- it will help it take a little more abuse. About $100 plus labor. :D
calabria69 01-04-2009, 05:48 PM definitely put a few thousand miles on it before mods.....every truck is different so you just never know!! O ya EFI live is the only way to go!!
DMAX687 01-04-2009, 05:59 PM x2 on efi live and if you delete the DPF you can get rid of the codes that will pop up in association with that. If y ou plan on doing a lot with the truck efi live is definatley the way to go. if not or you don't want to mess with efi live as it is a much more involved tuning program I would go with the ppe Hot+2 eccelerator. That will make you the most power.
I also definatley would advise driving the truck for a few weeks to get all the possible bugs worked out. It's easy for a dealer to tell you that they will still work on it even if you put parts on it but if it's not in writing they can take that statement away in a heartbeat. Any way a dealer can get out of warrenty work they will use. I know it will suck having to wait but if any problems arise it will be worth the wait. Good luck with the truck and keep everyone posted!!!
08DuramaxBoy 01-04-2009, 06:18 PM I have the 4" Magnaflow turbo back exhaust with the Quad stealth 2 and I coudnt be any happier with them. I am currently running my magnaflow muffler but thainking about deleting it with a peplacement pipe for a better turbo sound. It sounds awesome right now though with no interstate droan even while towing. X2 on not going over the 100hp mark on the tunner. I am not going over the 90 setting myself to save on the allison. My quad makes great power for the money:D See nate on here for some great deals! he hooked me up:cool:

I'm past the stage where I want a loud truck:o: It is a little louder, I do notice a whistle at idle, I do like the sound when I get on the pedal;) Only notice a little more noise in the cab at highway speed. most of my driving has been around town with a lot of idling time but does appear to be getting better mileage. best part is I am able to run heating oil for $1.82 vs ULSD at $3.39:D
Ruplanecrazy 01-04-2009, 07:26 PM you have any warranty issues?
have had the tranny replaced twice so far, first time was a torque converter lockup problem at 4000 miles dealer blamed it on the cold, second transmission 900 miles later when it locked up tight going down the road and came to a screeching halt. 3rd tranny now has 7000 on it and is working for now.
Had the tranny lines replaced last winter and again this winter.
Front shocks started leaking after 3000 miles
brake booster powersteering line leaking last spring and just had the Altenator replaced.
Other than the tranny problems just small things
the_shark 01-04-2009, 10:23 PM You guys want before and after pictures and vids?

i would still be very careful. in the end the dealer has no say on what can and cant be warrantied. there have been tons of info released from gm about warranties and tuners. if there is a major issue, ie: engine or tranny blown, and gm corporate gets involved they will deny the claim regardless what the dealer says. and with the tough times they are going through they will definitely find any reason not to pay for a 10k dollar motor. people always say they have to prove the programmer did the damage. that is true, however they dont have to do this until you have taken them to court at which time you now have lawyer fees and what not. it becomes very expensive. dont want to be a dick just want to make sure you are totally informed.
i run a 4" mbrp with efi live. sounds awesome with some drone on the freeway. of course the drone from the new tires is now louder than the exhaust. good luck with the new truck

Thanks for the info. I think under your guys advise i'm going to put a couple thousand miles on it before modifying it. I'm definitely going MBRP turbo back. You are absolutely right about the times and how much they may want to sink into the truck if it blows up. I'm not looking at huge mods. Just indake, exhaust and chip for now. Probably won't take the chip over 100 HP. But when the warranty is close to being up... I'm thinking twins ;).. pics will be up soon. Going to pick up the truck in a few hours.
the_shark 01-05-2009, 09:13 AM I may just chip it though a couple thousand in... Just cause it's the easiest to take out if i have to take it back to the dealership
DMAX687 01-05-2009, 03:11 PM keep in mind that the lmm's have ecm tattle tail software so even if you have a programer and take it out the ecm will still tell the dealer if anything was ever installed
the_shark 01-05-2009, 03:14 PM ****in tattle tails... Thanks for the heads up
the_shark 01-05-2009, 03:24 PM Wondering about getting a pre-programmed ECM and swapping it out? Anyone know if this is a good idea or have tried it?
bjadamsr6 01-05-2009, 09:49 PM Might work but there is still info on the ECM that would throw flags. Only way is to get a tuner that goes in line with the ECM. Like banks or edge
the_shark 01-05-2009, 10:22 PM Might work but there is still info on the ECM that would throw flags. Only way is to get a tuner that goes in line with the ECM. Like banks or edge
OH please explain! I'm such a newb! So if i get a chip that goes in line with the ECM I can remove it and the dealer will never know?:D
Diesel Dragon 01-05-2009, 10:36 PM The Edge and Banks plug in under the hood, you have to unplug the main wiring harness for the motor and plug there tuners inline. The tuners intercept the signals between the ECM and the engine and add in their own values to give you more HP.
Edge has been doing this since day one almost 6 years ago.
So with their tuners your not actually rewriting the ECM your just piggy backed on the system and the ECM and dealer shouldn't know anything.
That being said there's speculation that they can still tell something is up by the tranny's computer which would try to compensate for the new HP and would leave a mark when you took the tuner out. Plus maybe other things in the LMM ECM that we don't know about yet.
The only other problem with Banks and EDGE is that they have no way of turning off the DPF Regens or shutting down the EGR so those 2 would have to stay active.
Only a ECM tuner can shut down those 2 and get rid of the codes and check engine light.

SullivanSeptic 01-05-2009, 10:45 PM Does anyone have undercarraige pics of a turbo back exhaust? Also, can the turbo back have a muffler put on. I just don't want the truck much louder then it is. I just want it to run better. The DPF is killing me on gas mileage and how the truck runs.

My Edge Evolution plugs into the OBD port in the cab?
Silverado6600 01-06-2009, 05:53 AM My question, is that if I go with a Quadzilla Stealth 2 tuner for now, with a 4" Turbo Back, can I switch out the Quad for the PPE later without running into problems?
capflya 01-06-2009, 07:19 AM My question, is that if I go with a Quadzilla Stealth 2 tuner for now, with a 4" Turbo Back, can I switch out the Quad for the PPE later without running into problems?
Yes.... just program the quad back to stock... and then flash with the PPE...
Silverado6600 01-06-2009, 07:59 AM Woohoo! So here's another question... what's an EGR blocker plate do for me?
capflya 01-06-2009, 11:18 AM Keeps exhaust from going back into the intake... IE prevents massive amounts of soot from going back into the engine... basically so it doesn't look like this http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w130/psyco66/Picture009-1.jpg
read this thread for more info... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257214&highlight=why+install+EGR+blocker
generalwar 01-06-2009, 11:23 AM Wow!
Silverado6600 01-06-2009, 07:24 PM That's horrible... Where do I get one? And how easy is it to put on? The DPF delete kits are pretty easy to put on themselves aren't they?
the_shark 01-06-2009, 07:28 PM UPDATE! Got the truck today! WOE! Was driving nicely to warm it up. Was leaving Saskatoon to head home, on the way out to the highway there was a hemi that pulled next to me and looked at me funny. Put her in four by, spooled the turbo and it was not funny. That truck goes a lot harder than I had imagined. VERY impressed! Actually scared me! Very cool! I have to say, the power is.....addicting :)
