: '05 LLY + Juice
swilk 03-31-2005, 07:50 AM I just traded my '02 Duramax for a new '05 GMX D/A. I have been reading alot the last couple of days about egr, block of plates, MAF modifications and so on. My questions is ... I want to install an Edge box with Attitude monitor to assist the trucks power in heavy towing situations. I had an Edge box on my last truck as well as MBRP 4" exhaust. I do not want to change anything else on this truck, just add the Edge box. What is to be expected when a power box is added to the LLY with no other modifications? Is it necessary to add an EGR block off plate and a stick? Or are most just doing that so that dirty air is not recirculated through the intake system?
Kennedy 03-31-2005, 09:22 AM The LLY Juice has seen some issues come and go. From the looks of things V1.2 has corrected every issue that I've seen. I haven't had a lot of time to test it, but my LLY is on the dyno awaiting my replacement of a couple of load control "chips" and then I intend to do some more testing.
The Edge EZ for the LLY also works VERY well and is very simple to control with only a toggle switch to select levels.
adork 03-31-2005, 09:48 AM For what it's worth, it seems just about everyone here feels that doing the EGR plate will guarantee a SES light. It did for me. I ordered up a stick, spent less than an hour installing it. Went the extra mile to solder all connections and heat shrink. Nicely finished off by split looming the whole set up. You can't even tell it's there. There are excellent instructions on this site showing step by step how to do it.
...my .02 worth.
swilk 03-31-2005, 09:59 AM On Cal. or the Northeast emmisions i think it will give a light no matter what. Unless I am missing something the Federal emmisions trucks dont seem to get a light very often.
crackerjack 03-31-2005, 10:03 AM I am looking at the exact same set up for my 05. I was worried about the transmission pulling a load. Do the numbers stay the same as far as the amount of torque (600ftlbs) before transmission problems when pulling a heavy load. Could the transmission handle the 2nd stage pulling 10,000lbs?
swilk 03-31-2005, 10:36 AM With my '02 truck I used the Edge box on level 2 when towing. Im not sure of the exact weight but it was in the neighborhood of 12000lbs or so. The longest pull was from Indiana to Colorado for an Elk hunting trip last fall. The transmission never missed a beat.
The LLY motor is rated at the same HP/TQ numbers in 1st and 5th gears that the LB7 motor was. In theory the Edge box should produce comparable numbers on the LLY motor that it did on the LB7 when towing in OD. When in 2-4th gears the power should be slightly more. I think in this situation the tranny should be fine.
Kennedy 03-31-2005, 07:15 PM I have the basic dyno testing done, but haven't really had time to evaluate in great detail yet.
D/A Power 03-31-2005, 07:21 PM As for your comment on the Finger Stick and Blocker Plate, you are correct in that most Ca trucks are getting the light. I have a Fed. emissions LLY, and have had the plate in for a couple weeks. There are codes, but no light. At this time, I am willing to live with the codes, but depending on how it goes, I may get the Stick sometime.
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 03-31-2005, 07:58 PM My '05 is on order and from all the threads I've read, I decided to go with the Plate and Stick. I live in the Northeast and will wind up with a Northeast truck. If you have seen the EGR block off plate thread showing the soot in the intake manifold, you too would probably Plate your new truck also. With the Plate, it seems eventually you will get a code and hence, the Stick is needed. I hope to install the Stick without cutting (would like to add a plug in type setup by removing the pins from the main plug), but until I get to that point, I don't know what I'll decide on.
As far as running the juice without the Plate/Stick mod, you should have no problems. Just all that soot build up in your intake! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/Throwup.gif
DuraDen 03-31-2005, 08:22 PM From everything I have read and visuals displayed on this site regarding soot buildup I definitely understand why the plate was created. But....so what? Diesel engines have been creating this kind of soot since their creation, right? And it's not like GM isn't aware of the soot buildup. So, if they aren't concerned enough about it creating trouble during the warrantee period and costing them millions, why should I? Some Duramax owners are racking up 50-75-100k miles a year and they aren't breaking down with the soot buildup, so I guess what I'm really asking is what is the real benefit? Not trying to sound like a troublemaker, but isn't the egr plate a solution in search of a problem?

It wouldn't exactly surprise me if some (or all) of these diesel EGR equipped trucks with function EGR valves that are getting to 100/150/200/250k+ miles have clogged EGR valve and/or cooler, and if it's a FED truck, it won't set a SES light, so you probably wouldn't know.
I still dont have my new truck, hope in a week or so.(vin assigned on tuesday) The way I understand it is egr plate for the soot build up and finger stick to eliminate codes caused by exhaust mods. I for one already have both the stick and plate, MBRP and edge will be ordered this weekend and plan to install the day I pick up the truck.
chubb 04-04-2005, 01:48 PM can anybody tell me what there running for common egt's on the 05 lly. Im running a bully dog power pup set on #2 ( 75 HP) k&n filter with MBRP from the cat back. can't afford the gauge's right now. I was told I could run on setting #3 (95 HP) from the Company I bought it Through. He said as long as i wasnt towing i would be fine on either setting. Should i trust this guy.... hate to have trouble this early in the game.
