: Speedometer not working

I did read up on this and thought it could be the stepper motor. But the driving distance on the DIC is not working either. Everything else works fine. Is there a fuse I should be checking or a sensor gone bad?
It started a couple of days ago driving in the snow and had a "Service Brake System" error and ABS light would come on. I restarted truck and after second time gottan rid of the error but speedo is not working no more.
My truck is a 03 Dmax with 96000 kilometer on it and according to the
"Special Policy" bulletin which SSDuramax66 posted (Thank you) truck serial# fits right under that policy and Dealer should replace complete
IPC. Any thoughts on this?

The speedometer sensor is on the Xfer case. Sounds like yours got unplugged, or something is goin' on (?bad?) inside the Xfer case. That same sensor is used for the ABS too, hence your ABS and Brake lamp activation.

If the Odometer isn't working, it's definitely not the cluster (nor that bulletin).:(

Thanks heymccall, that makes sense because everything else is working on the cluster but the Speedo and the Odometer, even cruise control works

After checking the sensor going to the Transfer Case to be ok I looked a bit more but could not find any unplugged or loose connection anywhere.
I called the Dealer for a appointment to check the cluster and do a gage sweep last saturday.
My appointment was today and just came back from them.
They said it's the IPC. I told them that the Odometer isn't reading either on top of the Speedometer but they want to order a new cluster (Twist my arm....hehe) and go from there.
I still believe that "heymccall" is right though because the stepper motor is only for the gage needel and therefor the Odometer should count.
I keep all of you updated when the new cluster comes in.

Update: It was the gage cluster. Dealer replaced no questions asked.
Everything works again. Speedometer and Odometer.

Well, I spoke to soon! Drove truck to work and speedo is bouncing up and down.
Sometimes even when I'm standing on a traffic light and not moving.
Guess it was not the IPC, unless I received a new/old one.
Truck is going in tomorrow again. I'll think this time I have to pay for it.

Ok, came back from Dealer and they said Truck is giving a code: B0540 (Speedometer something). They wanted to investigate the wiring and said that I have a programmer
installed (Edge, never had any problem with it at all for the last 3 years), than I knew
they really don't know.
After they replaced the IPC under the special Service Bulletin I'll think it only makes sense now to replace the Speed Sensor for 60$ in the Transfer case before going on a wild goose chase and blaming the programmer and wiring.
What do you guy's think?

A cruise around the block with a Tech II in the right mode will verify whether the Speed Sensor is sending the correct info. Is the oil in the Transfer Case "sparkle" free and, obviously, still in there.

heymccall, thanks for your reply. Yes the oil was changed last year. I told them to go ahead and replace the sensor.
When the new cluster was installed and acting up the day after, I even get message on the DIC "Driver Door Open" when I was sitting in my Driveway with the door open. That
message you only usually get when vehicle is moving and not parked.
You said right at the beginning of this thread that it is the sensor and I believe you were right. Thank you, I'll keep you posted.

I had this same thing happen about a year ago, all gauges worked except the spedo and odometer. It was a broken wire on the drivers side front wheel well. The dealer said it is not uncommon given the amount of off road driving we do in this area. Apparently rocks and mud being thrown off the front tire wear through the wiring that sits on top of the wheel well.
