Lately the engine hasn't fired right up upon cranking. It turns over fine but only sounds like a few cylinders are firing. It feels really embarassing when I am in a parking lot and it does it.
It is hard to describe what it is doing, but after reading through a couple threads.....I think it might be air in the filter or water maybe. Also it seems to do it more when it has been sitting for a couple hours in the cold.
One other thing not related...... when the motor is cold does the turbo let more boost through the wastegate? I noticed that while accelerating normally it will be up at 10lbs....then when I get on it a little the exhaust tone changes and the boost drops to around 5lbs.

My truck was doing the hard start thing for a while, turned out to be a cracked Water In Fuel sensor. The dealer cracked it when they put a new filter in.
My truck also does the high boost thing when cold, I think it may do it to help it warm up.

My thoughts would also be either air in the system or water in the fuel.;)

the WIF sensor was my problem when it did that. Like $60 I think. The high boost I think is because when its cold the tranny seems to take longer to shift so it holds a gear longer so its like your still accelerating before it shifts. More acceleration means more most. Could be wrong though.
And on a side note You dont have a wastegate if you have an 06. VVT takes care of that

Had that happen this summer. Mine was the WIF sensor.
To verify, next time it does not start . Pop the hood and prime the filter. Then try to start again. If it does start up after priming or starts to leak fuel while priming. It could be a leaking wif sensor like mine.
In other posts like this some had leaking filter base of leaking filter. Since the filter is in a negative presure it sucks in air.
Hope this helps, Frank

glow plug controler or the glow plugs may be bad.

I would suspect the glow plugs or controller as well. Air or water in the fuel system would also show up as reduced power output.

I never got a reduced power message but my WIF would piss fuel out unless I had the valve just right

I just went out to the truck and primed it.
It had been sitting since friday afternoon without running.
It fired right up.
The bleeding screw was very loose. I could just barely unscrew it with my fingers so maybe some air got in through there
