Just wondering if any of you 6.2 guys are running no mufflers on your exhaust.. I know a few 6.5L turbo guys are running no mufflers but from what i understand the turbo kinda acts like a muffler.

the turbo does act as a muffler. No muffler on a na engine would be loud! I have run glasspacks with good results or other free flowing mufflers.

I ran no mufflers on my 82 na 6.2 for 1 wheeling season. Load as fawk. On the trail when getting on it everyone though I had a 454. On the street it was too loud, it drowned out the hum of my 39.5" Swamper Boggers; which is hard to do. Had to drive it 4 hours once to get to the wheeling spot, will never do it with no mufflers again. One I get to the exhaust part of my build-up, I am putting 2 flowmaster 40's.

yeah it is REAL loud without a muffler. I cut my exhaust off right before and right after the muffler, and just put on a turn down pipe there for the week while i was working on welding in the straight pipe etc etc. I am thinking that when i drive this thing tomorrow it may not be as loud cuz my thoughts were that the exhaust was resinating off of the ground and the bottom of the truck bed making it sound a lot louder. So i am hoping that having it run out of the factory location it might make it less loud, and more tolerable, cuz i think it was just to loud. wasn't bad when ideling, but when i stepped on er it would just bark real real loud. So i will find out tomorrow when i head out for the day to see what she sounds like. Hope after all this work i don't have to go and put on a muffler.

As long as the exhaust is piped all the way to the back and sort of pointed to the rear the cab noise isn't to bad. The dual mufflers on a stock 6.2L have got to be restrictive cutting them off should make a slight power increase.

My personal opinion: The Louder The Better

well my exhaust is complete. welded in the straight pipe where the muffler used to be. Everything is factory except the no muffler. WAY WAY quieter than when i was running with the turn down under the bed of the truck(doesn't sound like a tractor from http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gif). And it is quieter than was when i was running it with my muffler cut up, but it does have a different sound to it. Anyways sounds good, not to loud so i'll be able to keep the neighbors somewhat happy. just thought i would share.

I had a very good muffler shop replace my oe exhaust to dual 2.5" with Magnaflow mufflers. It was WWAAaayyyyyy to freaking loud at 1/3 throttle unloaded!! I did get 25mpg!
I was not happy and brought it back and they replaced the mufflers with "oe" spec. What a better sound at full throttle under load, but quiet around town.

:exactly:

glasspacks on my dual 2.75" works great. bigger size is next, once these rust off..which wont be while. (kinda hopefully)

you guys..add some headers..in my own opinion.

anyone have any thoughts on under the door side pipes for the 80's series 6.2s? pictures? ever seen one done? how loud do you think

I'm straight-piped out the back, and it's loud. Really not too bad with the windows rolled up, but now that it's warm I hear what everyone else is hearing. I love the deep resonance, but it's probably borderline obnoxious. Hopefully the sweet smell of biodiesel makes up for it.

I agree with the louder the better therory! I was about to check for headers for my '84 6.2. I will go up to at least 3.5 inch if not 4 inch from a collector as I will be running stacks, and feel if I do this it will be a lower note, thus sounding a little quieter and a more free flow. I swear by the use of "header wrap" for performance, not just underhood temps. Brent

I never used it, but Ive heard that header/exhaust wrap quickens rust-rot on wrapped areas??

nobody with thoughts on under door to rear wheel side pipes?

On a daily or near daily driven truck, rot is not a problem as they get plenty dry upon fire up. If they sit, they can collect moisture. i used it on a f-550 with 4inch from turbo with a 100 horse chip. We did a 4 or 4.5 inch exaust brake and 5 inch turnout pipes turned to remove as much heat as possible as we pulled a 36 foot trailer weighing 27,000 pounds. We could pull hard through the tranny and 2 OD units, (one of which was a splitter) and in the next to high gear we would "cool our heels a bit" let the pyrometer drop below 950 and pull to high gear. We called 1100 degrees our high safe temp. We got better turbo temp drop after we put the header wrap all the way to the exaust brake. Never a problem and we ran amsoil throughout and a by-pass filter on the motor. Brent

I forgot to mention, the trailer was a race car hauler style and we did stacks that were 7 footers which allowed me to turn them to get the most "draw" which allowed the pyrometer to drop so fast or the owner was gonna make me pull the trailer without a chip! WHHAAAA!!!! What a beast it was! Brent

I run 2.5 inch off the manifolds straight out under the bumper, not bad for me but it sure sets off alarms in the underground parking lots when you stomp on it. I don't notice it in the cab though. Is there anywhere you can get headers without getting the whole banks system?????????

Stans's headers makes them.
Also, if you can find them, i think military 6.2L hmmvw's had them.

Hello! It's my 1st post to this forum. Looks very informative place.:cool2:

My question is, what would be a good muffler on a single 3" exhaust? Now I'm running some nameless muffler that is 3" in/out, but pipe size drops somewhere near 2-2,5" inside the muffler. Feels a bit restrictive. Parts dealer said that it works just fine, but I have my doubts...

I've read somewhere that 70-series Flowmaster might be a good choice? I tried one glasspack (Simons), it worked only couple of months 'till it get clogged, might as well run straight pipe. Way too loud!

I hardly ever do it, and didnt mean to this hard, but I really stepped on it to get through traffic today, from dead stop. boy was it loud, and sounding great! even great pickup and go too. thats dual 2.75" glasspacks with headers for you. :ro)

I liked the idea of putting it right out under the bumper, but yeah..id miss the sound in the cab actually.
