: Dually Drivers-Ever Need To Squeeze Somewhere?
getpower 01-02-2009, 03:58 AM This question is more of one where I would like to know if there have been situations EVER where you wished that you could get somewhere that you couldnt.
Now, I am not talking about really obvious stuff like "going through drive-throughs" or parking situations.
I am talking about the "off-the-beaten-path" situations. Stuff like having to get through a narrow fence on a dirt road or in between a couple of rocks or something.
If you can think of anything that I may have missed, then please post it.
jtaylor11 01-02-2009, 05:38 AM Yeah there is a couple places on the river I cant get between trees to mkake it to some of the sand bars. But O well, got a 4 wheeler now so no need in taking this fat gurl all the way down in there.

emerson 01-02-2009, 02:27 PM Honestly, I can't think of many places that I have had problems putting a bobtailing highway tractor. I put 10' wide cranes in places I would hesitate to put my truck. You should be fine with the dually, as long as you don't forget your width.
I take mine into the woods for firewood and blaze my own trails...... Bedsides show the evidence:D. Ohh well adds character besides whats the point of owning a truck if you dont use it.
Rosey 01-02-2009, 03:54 PM When I bought the truck to pull my 5th wheel, I knew it's space limitations and just live with it. I'll tell ya one thing though........once you drive a duramax dually......you'll have a permanent smile on your face and won't worry about the places that you can't go :D......it's one sweet machine. If I know in advance that I have to get somewhere that may be a tight fit..........I'll just drive my 1/2 ton.
getpower 01-02-2009, 05:36 PM I hear you guys.
And thanks, those are exactly the kind of answers I was looking for.
I have a 1/2-ton F150 right now, and I cant say that I can think of anywhere that I may not be able to get through with a dually, but if I get a diesel truck, I would trade in my 1/2-ton-and thats why I asked the question.
Great answers, I hope for more.
Unfortunately, in California, you cant blaze your own trails:(!

KarlVP 01-02-2009, 09:51 PM Mostly when I go into the city with my dually. I know I shouldn't be down there but do it anyway because I am a glutton for punishment.
Seattle isn't so bad, but chicago sucks.
JD hauler 01-02-2009, 10:43 PM whoever is the first to design a car wash that will fit 4 door duallys will be our hero for sure. LOL

Davediesel3 01-03-2009, 10:39 AM My Garage!
X2!
Although mine is not a width problem, the darn truck is too long!(garage built in 1930 only 22'x22')
I really would have had problems if I'd have gotten the crew cab I wanted!
komh98 01-03-2009, 02:55 PM The problem I have had is tearing my drive way up when I turn in. Guess it a heavy truck and dirt drive way. That why I built me a new drive way we call Interstate H. lol Also the bank, some banks have the cowboy lane but where I go they don't so I have to go inside.
josh2500 01-04-2009, 03:58 AM hell if you really need to make it in the places that are "to tight" just haul ass. it wll go form a big drw to a srw real quick.
capflya 01-04-2009, 04:29 AM getpower: I see you are in pacifica... do you go into SF much? That wouldn't be too much fun in a dually... Good luck with parking... I'm kinda picky with mine so it's hard for me as is... with a dually I would probably not go into the city with it.... I saw a dually driving through downtown once when I was driving through embarccadero area and he was doing ok... all the little cars move out of my way pretty quick when I'm in the city...
If you don't go in much, or have a car to take then I wouldn't worry about it... the other thing is... do you really need a dually? I would have liked one because in my opinion you can't have too much truck :D But if you don't really need it, and you might be going into areas with small streets often (like SF) then you would probably be better off with a 2500... Hope this helps you!
Jgwjr 01-05-2009, 12:03 AM the only places that i have had problems is trying to parallel park downtown when i need a permit or license, the racks make it kinda hard to fit in a parking garage.
getpower 01-05-2009, 12:37 AM I dont really go into the city much technically.
I work in downtown SF on Pier 50, but I exit on Mariposa and follow it down to the waterfront which on my route isnt tight at all.
Other than that, I dont go into the "real" city where its very tight driving.
I think that I may end up with a SRW anyway.
Shane01638 01-05-2009, 12:48 PM I would say parking garages, especially at the airport. I always have to park in long term parking. If I go downtown I have to park at an end spot on the street.
We have a couple car washes that will fit dually's. We have one called Monster Wash that was made specifically for big trucks. They have a bay for dually's, and an even bigger bay for box trucks.
gasuout 01-05-2009, 01:33 PM I definately have parking issues on a normal basis .
Many times offroading I have had to back out of some hairy places .
Funny how easy it was going in forward . Never seems to be so easy to find or keep the same line I rolled in on .
This is out on some trails at night . Had to back down a steep trail here in the dark . Scratching the dually fenders on the bushes as usual .

This generally a bigger problem for me ...... getting stuck . :D

juneau92 01-05-2009, 02:46 PM Now, I am not talking about really obvious stuff like "going through drive-throughs" or parking situations.
Just for the record, a 3500 dually can fit through any drive through, bank teller, fast food, Starbucks, whatever... At first I parked away from them, and walked. With some practice, you'll have no problem! You just have to be careful, and to know what to look for! :)
Brad92 01-05-2009, 04:29 PM Wanna bet? I know of a couple Wells Fargo banks that a regualar truck barely gets through let alone a dually.
serpa4 01-05-2009, 05:50 PM hate trying to fit under/between the legs of my truck camper. only 1 inch per side.
VWhauler 01-05-2009, 07:18 PM Just for the record, a 3500 dually can fit through any drive through, bank teller, fast food, Starbucks, whatever... At first I parked away from them, and walked. With some practice, you'll have no problem! You just have to be careful, and to know what to look for! :)
There are a few drive throughs here that there's no way. Most of them are smaller fast food places where length is just as much of a problem as the width. The Taco Bell near my house is impossible in ANY full size crew cab truck much less my dually. I've only run into a couple of places that are simply too narrow to go straight through. I can get through the local Wachovia branch with about half an inch on each side from the rear tires to the curbs. I have to fold the driver's side mirror in to avoid hitting the ATM (Cipa mirrors), but the truck will fit if you are careful. If it still had the original West Coast mirrors, I'd have to go inside.
The Murphy (Sam's Club/Wal-Mart) station is one way with the diesel pumps on the left side of the station. The lanes exit straight into a curb and to the left with a narrow lane to get out. I have to back up and swing wide to make the turn without tearing the left fender off. During the holidays, some jerk pulled right up to my rear bumper, refusing to move his Toyota and I couldn't get out. I ended up turning right and driving out backwards through the one way entrance, much to the dismay of the attendant and other drivers. Yes, there were single finger salutes and four letter words involved.
Aside from the normal stuff, I've had to take down a section of fence to make it through a narrow gate into a friend's back pasture.

Im tickled pink on finding a 08 for this price.
Ill let y'all know what it does in the woods with in reason.Gonna be my primary drive truck and to hunt out of .
Im fixin to upgrade the wheels bigger like tractor trailer set up if i can.
Oh ya this truck has air bags too for some reason.
Hope im gonna like it .My 07 2500 duramx is just okay now.Was told the dually ride much better then the 2500s.
Thanks for listening !!
Im pumped up on my first dually.
Ill post pics this weekend.
Gruber 01-10-2009, 11:22 AM I put on a set of 265's with Fred's 2" spacers. I went to put my Lance camper back on and the rear wheels wouldn't fit inbetween the jacks:eek: I freaked out for a second but then realized that if I set my camper down on my steel saw horses and spread the 2 front jacks out I had about 3/4" clearance on each side. I didn't think about the clearance and the spacers so it was pretty unnerving for a couple of minutes before I can up with that plan;) BTW for what it's worth I regret going to the 265's. My tranny temps have gone up about 10-15* across the board. Same long grade same conditions with 215's 188* 265's 209*

Be careful with the word "any"!. I went through a drive-up ATM at my bank and all seemed well while I was entering and while I did my business. Trouble started when I tried to exit. The curbs on either side were funnel shaped and pushed my tail end to the left. Next thing I know, I feel a bump. When I looked in the rear view mirror, I saw that the ATM was sitting inside my wheel well and had been moved about 3 inches. I backed out and waited for the cops, figuring I had probably set off an alarm of some kind. Lucky for me, no alarm and only a minor scratch inside the wheel well. I contacted the bank the next day to let them know they need a sign saying "NO DUALLIES" on that machine.
MilDot 01-22-2009, 04:34 AM I thought about it before I bought the truck and figured I could live w/o drivethrus and car washes. Three weeks later I got hurt. Now everywhere I could have just driven through I get out w/ crutches etc. I STILL have no regrets. Love this truck!
still looking for places I can fit though. So far I found one bank drivethru and two ATM's in the county, but I'm still looking around. It just pisses off that trucks don't fit anywhere in TEXAS!!! There is an outside lane at the Walgreens I get my prescription filled that would be eighteen feet wide but they put up those damn yellow things that bend over, so I just run over them, they hit just inside my pass. side tires... I thought I could fit in one bank drive through last week, luckily the tire hit the curb before the fender found the pole. I backed out, that's the only time I have mis-judged so far. Scared the hell out of me. I'd rather deal w/ crutches and crap than hurt my baby.
chevmeister 01-24-2009, 09:46 PM I put my truck through any drivethrough. My bank thinks im crazy cause I have 2" on either side to the poles.
LMMdiesel 01-25-2009, 07:15 PM anybody ever converted a dually to a single wide tire. i see it on semi's and researched a few... no rim and tire package yet for a pickup. (i don't wanna do the 22.5 single wide rear what they have on the semi's)
jtaylor11 01-25-2009, 09:00 PM anybody ever converted a dually to a single wide tire. i see it on semi's and researched a few... no rim and tire package yet for a pickup. (i don't wanna do the 22.5 single wide rear what they have on the semi's)
You can get the same 22.5 wheel and have it milled or turned down to a 22. Dont remember how they do it. But I dont know about what tire size to run.
LMMdiesel 01-26-2009, 05:41 PM that's too much crap involved, plus even a 20" i don't know if there is a tire with the right specs to replace the two coming off... (weight wise) in a few years i'm sure they're gonna start making it in 19.5 (and other sizes) since they say it gets better mileage, and it meets all DOT requirements.
tshideler 01-26-2009, 05:53 PM they do make a single wheel and tire extra wide to use on a dually
CHV_FRK 01-26-2009, 09:16 PM I know some place that my dually won't fit through.... I have the estimate to prove it. Maybe I can try to get a photo up on here sometime.
kicker139db 01-27-2009, 11:53 AM Some drive-tru's here are tight. I ride the curb sometimes, take out a few bushes. Car washes, parking garages, some atms. Most time its not fittin thru that the problem but the 5-6 point turn ya gotta make if ya dont fit and have to turn around. U turns suck too. I have to get in the right lane to make a U-turn and still find myself in the right lane on the otherside off the road.(4 lanes)
Brad92 01-27-2009, 12:14 PM thats why I think in horror about duallys and longbeds when my ccsb has a terrible turning radius already
needadeisel 01-28-2009, 05:03 PM had an ex girlfriend that found a gate the truck wouldnt fit through, she went anyhow. hence the ex. downtown parking sucks, but people tend to get out of the way.
REY dela REYES 01-29-2009, 09:25 AM I think we should have some sort of manuvering challenge @ some of these get togethers that are held. I know i can manuver this beast like a champ alleys, bank drive thru etc... * sorry for spelling
