stockrex 01-01-2009, 07:27 PM A Happy Diesel new Year to everyone!
was in D&W parking lot making a tight right turn, right side of the tires on the right were hopping/jumping, was in 4wd,
WTF, lmm does not come with limited slip? *&^^%$

Look on your window sticker, will be listed as G80. Its an option.
stockrex 01-01-2009, 07:50 PM Breecher, thanks, my window sticker is quite faded, I will post my vin in the vechile hx forum for the build sheet. Thanks,
FireStarter 01-01-2009, 07:52 PM Look on the build sticker in your glovebox, It should be there, most Dmax trucks come with the G80
JIMMMY 01-01-2009, 08:21 PM Being in 4wd changes things for tight turns G80 or not.......
What Jimmmy said. The G80 limited slip is between the two rear wheels, but when you're locked in 4wd you have one of the front wheels locked to the rear. That's where your hopping was coming from. There is no differential in the transfer case. Think of it as a locker between the front and rear axles.
stockrex 01-01-2009, 10:40 PM Jimmy, will test tomorrow morning in 2wd,
I am pretty sure I do not have the quite unnecessary, optional limited slip. why would anyone make turn in these huge trucks ;-)
off to the dealer in the morning.
DanW, thanks for clarifying the working...in 4wd, makes sense to moi.
JIMMMY 01-01-2009, 11:05 PM That G80 will take you places in a 2wd truck that a 4wd rig without it will not go - true story. You should hope you have it......
Shasta 01-01-2009, 11:41 PM If you have an LMM, then you have the G80 locker.
capflya 01-02-2009, 06:45 AM If you have an LMM, then you have the G80 locker.
Sorry but that is not always the case... not ALL LMM trucks have the G80... it is an option... if your truck is a Z-71 then it has the G80, or if its an option that was picked then you will have it... but not ALL trucks with the LMM have it...

I stand corrected. IIRC it was standard in the earlier trucks, but the three that I have had all had the trailering / HD suspension pkgs...
stockrex 01-02-2009, 10:43 AM Just got back from the service dept, the gentleman at the counter printed off my build sheet,
I have G08, yeaaah, yipppe, yeapsters
I did not get a chance to test out the tight turn with 2wd will do that later in the day when I pick up my truck for the frontend vibration/noise on 4wd issue which they are looking into.
Thanks everyone for their input
JIMMMY 01-02-2009, 10:45 AM We assume you are using 4wd on ice/snow/mud. Certainly don't try that tight 4wd turn on dry pavement.
;)
Runaway 01-02-2009, 10:47 AM The LTZ was standard for the limited slip, and everything else was an option IIRC!
stockrex 01-02-2009, 11:07 AM well here in Grand Rapids MI, there is nothing called dry pavement in zee winter, best description would be semi dry or mixed pavement, :-)
but I understand why it is doing the hopping in 4wd,
Gotta try the same with ma wifey's ridgeline...
Drgonslyr2 01-02-2009, 11:17 AM I may be wrong but I believe that you must be in manual and in 2nd for the limited slip to work. - Thats how I read the info.
randy_the_hack 01-02-2009, 11:46 AM Moved to Drivetrain...
Newguy 01-02-2009, 11:50 AM The hopping when you turn in 4WD is because the front and rear axles are NOT limited slip. When you are in 4WD both axles are firmly tied together, and when you are turning - the distance travelled by the front tires is less than the rear, so in order to not totally bind up, the front tires "slip" on the pavement.
It's not a good idea to drive around doing hard turns in 4wd unless you are on a slick surface.
I was driving to work today in 4WD until I got onto a smooth pavement, as all the sidestreets are snow/ice.

Actually that's a 'built in' limited slip of another kind... it's for snow and ice taking off from a stop. It's to keep the wheels from spinning.
The g80 will work as long as you're under 25mph. It's not a 'quiet' lock either FYI - The first time i was out screwing around and mine locked it scared the shit out of me. I honestly thought I blew it up.
I brought it to the dealer and he chuckled, said he's seen the same thing from the consumers SINCE the G80s came out.
They LOCK up, you can feel and hear it. It's designed to do that so let it do it's job and just drive it - it's not hurting anything.
I only asked him because I was worried.
This'll help ya on understanding the G80

Did anyone else catch that they got the 2wd and 4wd GMC/Chevy truck video clips mixed? The silver one is a 2wd and the red was a z-71.... just thought that was kinda funny :D
KEVINL 01-02-2009, 05:39 PM The G80 works like in the video but 95% of the time it doesn't do squat if I floor it around a corner I will just light one tire up. It is useful at low speeds though
JIMMMY 01-02-2009, 06:15 PM :exactly:
:thankyou2
ALL HAIL THE G80 LOCKER!
:bow::bow:
:bow::bow:
Yea my salesman said he witnessed such a demo on a proving grounds - glad to finally see it for real. :D
Taking my rig home from the stealership at the end of the 400 mile trip, merging onto a terrible on-ramp off-ramp where several lanes of traffic converge Hwy 18 west and Hwy 167 south by Auburn WA..... I was able to feel the G80 lock in for the first time.... It was raining and when I hit the peddled to merge as we come around the tightly curved merging ramp the right rear tire spun enough and I could feel the G80 kick in........ That put a smile on my face! :D
Jasondt2001 01-02-2009, 07:00 PM You're welcome!!! I liked the videos and remembered someone posted them here before so I thought I'd find them.
Someone up there said they'll get you into things that 4x4's cant and I agree... I've had my dually in some spots and situations right before I hit the 4X button I thought I'd give it a try... Sure enough, it sucked it on out.
I LOVE this truck! :)

that's the way it is designed. It won't lock up on turn, it will however stay locked if it is locked before a turn. If it did lock up on a turn, one tire would have to scrub anyway, just like in 4wd.
stockrex 01-04-2009, 09:37 AM did the tight turns in 2wd, no wheel hops while in 2wd :-)
