: Cummins governor has got to go.....

First off, I just want to say that I did not "pull a Hoot" and buy a Dodge. :cookoo: It is a bit strange to post in the Dodge forum....

I drive a Cummins-powered vehicle where I work. The trouble is this engine has absolutely NO power. In fact, it can barely get moving when driving into a headwind, and it takes upwards of 3/4 - 1 mile to get to 55. -:t It's drivin' me nuts! The truck drives great otherwise, though. It is a 1997 Oshkosh, 10000 lb empty commercial van, with a 5 speed Spicer transmission. The truck, as of today, has 229,200 miles.
How can I can get some more "oomph". What can I do to get this engine to pull it's own weight? Do you guys have any advise that I can tell my mechanic to be on the look for? I know absolutely nothing about these engines.

call Dale Jarrett, he should give you some advice on tuning the truck for good performance!

Have your mechanic check the tubo waste gate diaphragm. You can check it by disconnecting the air line that goes between the P7100 injection pump AFC and the turbo and try blowing air through it with your mouth. If you can blow air with out resistance the diaphram is bad. Also check the diaphram in the AFC on the injection pump. A quick check is to put a plug in the afc line going to the afc or crimping the hose shut with vise grips. The other problem could be the p7100 over flow valve. The over flow valve is what maintains fuel pressure in the injection pump. Its located at the front of the pump between the cylinder head and the pump. It takes a 19mm or 3/4in wrench to remove it, and has 10mm plug at the top. Remove this valve and shake it by hand, if you hear movement its bad, If you pull the 10mm plug and the spring is in 2 pieces its bad. Bosch has upgraded this valve. Also check your lift pump psi. If you mechanic wants to play pull the AFC housing off the p7100 and start by moving the fuel plate toward the front of the motor. A .020in forward = about 20 hp and 40ft, lbs of torque. If thats not enough grind the steps off the fuel plate. If you start grinding or if you buy a plate you better have a pyro to watch EGT's

Good advice VOODOO Trucker, that's the way I would go at it,:D :D as far as

the governer goes, have your 'mechanic' to install a 3K GSK (governer-spring-

kit) to have a little more fun. Aside from Voodoo Trucker's advice, there is also

an 8 mm allen head on top of the pump, unscrew this (be sure not to lose the

small washer) and there will be a 'star wheel'. Turn this as many clicks towards
the motor as possible.:ro) Slide the cam plate full forwards and :grd: !!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Maybe we can "kick this pig" and get it to run right.

Pull the afc off and remove the plate. Grind the plate down so it is even with the vertical.(top of the plate) Next bar the engine over and give the gov spring 2 clicks tighter(2 sets of springs directly accross from each other). Reinstall the plate 3/4 forward. Install the afc full forward. That should give you a pick me up tune up. Opps! Dont forget gauges! Let us know how it runs.........Brad

Holy crap, I bet The Bac will be the only UPS driver running pillar gauges, roasting tires, and putting up smoke clouds.:ro)

On edit: Probably not to good for UPS's enviromental image though, but I bet those next day airs get there before 10:30 everytime.):h

I have both 10:30 and noon Air commits, and they get there on-time every time! (Just have to give myself a extra little bit of "drive" time.....)

Tom,

While we know that we have the trucks turned down, we feel that for the safety of those on the roads and our drivers, that the trucks should not be modified and kept at the current configuration.

My department has received many requests over the past year for the govenors to be removed from the diesel trucks. We have had several studies conducted and have determined that our trucks will run longer with less repair and operating costs by keeping them governed.

Thanks.

Ok, that makes 2 UPS mechanics on the board that I know of. Andrew...tell me how safe is it when this truck is such a dog, that people on mopeds could out-accelerate me? Thats exaggerating the point, but you get the idea. This isnt about topspeed (can't go above 55 ;) ).....its about how fast it takes to get moving between stops. The Navistar diesels are great, and these Cummins motors just suck.......

I guess this idea goes in the dumpster now, same as that idea for a 350/TH400 pkg car way back when (before UPS thought up the diesels).............

Ah well, you can't fault a guy for trying, now can you?

They already do that.....I wear brown, remember?

Actually, the shop hates me to death, I'm one of the few drivers in our center that actually EXPECTS them to do their jobs and keep thse vehicles running right. I've had "powwows" with the bosses about the lack of adequate maintenence.(even on PMI's)

Aw well. Thanks anyway for the inputs guys....it was fun thinking it was possible.

LAUGHS!!

I couldn't resist, it was APril 1, and I was just in the cranky mood.

If I knew how to make the truck go faster, I'd tell ya how. I hate slow doggy trucks, reminds me of the two times I had to rent a 25' Ryder for work, POS trucks had no balls.

So, resume your idea, cause I have no UPS connections, other than when my packages come on time and when I expect!!

Someone has to keep you on your toes, not like the gps in the trucks isnt enough.

Suppose you get it turned up, and they notice, hey, he gets to 55 too quick :)

A buddy of mine is a diesel mechanic and works for Gordon Food Service (GFS) on their big rigs, I'll see if he knows anything about these engines.

Oh yeah, AF, you had me going there.....I figured I'd be gettin a call from District Mgr on Monday......

You know about the GPS capabilities of our DIAD boards, too, huh? Yeah, they can track us on computer....but if you arent doing anything wrong, its no worry.

As for the truck, I'm going to ask my mechanic if he would want to check these things, to see if maybe something isn't out of spec. Thanks again!

Andrew was just having fun....unless he REALLY is a UPS vehicle maintence supe.

Heck, all I want to do is be able to pull out safely into traffic. 12-second 1/4 runs between stops is way overkill!

(But secretly, I think that would be hilarious!!):cool2:

Anyway, after this week's vacation, I'll get with my "friends" in the shop and see......

With a few little mods anybody you pull out in front of will watch you go from brown to black. Fuel plate? you don't need no stincking fuel plate:D :joke: . Well, not unless you want the Diesel Police dragging you off in the middle of the night. I hope you get your truck running right. With the help of someone who knows how to turn it up, you can get it turned up to where you like it for next to nothing. It would be funny to get back at your UPS shop mechanics that did not bother to help you. Just pull the fuel plate out, back your truck in the shop and go to full throttle. While the mushroom cloud of death fills the shop yell! "I think the truck finally gave up and fixed itself!" or tell them "Hey I think the truck finally figured out how to log fault codes using smoke plumes!"
Man! I almost want to get a job at UPS just to do this! Day 1. Make a low power complaint to shop. Day 2. Install 4k governor springs, 370 marine injectors, #0 fuel plate, 191 DV's, set timing to 21 degrees, N20,and a line lock. Day 3. Enjoy getting done 7 hrs early and having the rest of the day to have fun with unsuspecting saps driving Vetts. Filling bus stops with smoke. writing your name on the street with the rear tires etc. If by the end of the day you manage to get back with out calling a tow truck, turn truck into shop for new tires, clutch slipping, and for low power complaints. Day 4. Get fired!!! Day 5. Applie at FedEx.
Lifes too short to be driving slow trucks...

:funnypost LMAO!!!! I can't stop laughing about this one!!!!

How did I know this simple little request for assistance would turn into a "Lets modify the UPS truck to put out 500HP"? :cookoo: This has been a laugh-riot! :rotflmao:

Yes, I'd be risking my A$$ if I mod the truck, thats why I have to get the shop involved. Sacrificing my job just to go faster wouldn't go over too well at home, know what I mean??
So, it has to be reasonable, and make sense to them. If its a simple adjustment that they messed up on when they did the injector change last year, I think they'd go for it. Otherwise....I get the :nono: , an then the :whip: .

That being said, its still fun to dream.....any mod would have to be "undetectable" unless you were looking for it, I'd have to be able to do it in under an hour (on lunch) using only hand tools with no chance of breaking something that would disable the truck. :muahaha:

I can hear it now...."There goes Bacon in his Racetruck....." or "Damn Bacon, what'd you do to your truck? I drove it during your vacation and it SCREAMS!"
