Got under there yesterday to take a look, and not wanting to force or break anything, I grabbed the plastic cap on the line and wasn't sure if I pushed it toward the tranny or away from the tranny to get to the spring clip?

Filters are in the mail, so need to have this point clarified. thanks

If you are going to pull the line you must first pry ( gently with screw driver ) the plastic retainer and slide it back. You must then use a small screw driver or a pick, scribe whatever and twist lock ring off of fitting ( they will fly so be carefull ). Slide the cooler line out of fitting. When done reverse the proceedure making sure the cooler line is all the way in then twist the three tab retainer back in the grooves. Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike, I take your response as pull the plastic cap away from the tranny. If I do a trial run today, will pulling the cap back without doing anthing else hurt anything? My filters are being shipped, so until they arrive, am treading water but don't want to screw it up when the time comes.

The little plastic caps pull away from the trans. They serve no purpose other than keep the little clips from somehow flying out. Once you get the little sping clips out it may take some pressure to pop the line out.

Also make sure when you put the line back in that the little clip is on the other side of the built in color of the line. If its not just push the line in a bit farthur, you should hear a click IIRC.

Also keep in mind when you yank the line it will start to pee on you till the line and the cooler drain.

Here's a picture of the clip after you slide the plastic back.

You can watch a little demo video on the site as well.

The filters I ordered arrived today. Thanks for the info on the clip. I am trying to gather the courage to do it either tomorrow or Saturday. God I am nervous.

Why are you going to remove the lines if you are just going to change the filters, or am I missing the rest of the story here? to change the filters, you just have to drop the pan for the inside one and spin off the small outside one. Dont forget to take the magnet out of the old spin on filter and clean it off so it can be reused in the new one.

Goodrnch: I am changing the fluid to Transynd ATF and want to purge the TC of most of the Dextron III fluid.

OBTW, the shallow pan filter arrived but was not in a box. All the other filters were boxed in their AC or Allison boxes. I am worried about the cleanliness of the Allison internal shallow pan filter. Has anyone else ordered one of the filters and if so, how was it packaged. I don't want to add dirt to the tranny when changing filters. :badidea:

None of my sump filters come packaged as they are awkwardly shaped. I would not worry.

Yes I had the directions printed out, but nowhere did anyone say anything about all the fluid that went all over the garage floor. I did not see where it was coming from, as I was along side the truck holding the hose into the 1 gal pail inside a 5 gal bucket. I think it came out of the hole where I removed the tranny line. I bet I lost 2-3 quarts on the ground. The clip did take a walk however, not when I was removing it, but when I was trying to push it into place. It flew up and over to the driver's side and stuck in a small crevice. It took me an hour to find it, but I had no option, the GM dealer closes at noon. Now if I can just do the EGT probe, my truck will be ready for it's June departure from MD to Pa to STL to Phoenix to San Diego to LA to Salinas to San Francisco to Buhl Idaho to MD!

I caught the fluid when I disconnected the line. Then I hooked up the hose, crawled out and put it into a bucket and told DW to fire her up. When I had 1 gal, shut it off, changed to the second gal and repeated the process. What I did not do is to look under the truck at the small lake of fluid that came out of somewhere when DW started the truck. :exactly: Didn't even notice until I looked under the truck. wow
