I have a 2004 GMC 2500HD Duramax/Allison with 21,000mi on it and I just took it in for an oil change and the dealer said that it was due for a Fuel Filter ($135) and twist on Allison Trans Filter ($80). They said the fuel filter is expensive to replace because it is one hours labor.

I went ahead and had them change the tranny filter because I do a lot of towing, but passed on the fuel filter.

What do you guys think? Is this necessary at 21k mi on it??

I keep on reading and hearing the fuel filter is recommended anywhere from 10K to 15K miles....

Hope you didnt pay $80 for the spin on filter replacement/installed...

That is one of the easiest up keeps to do yourself. Anyway, I had my fuel filter changed around 15K.

Mine:
Oil changes....around 7500
Allison spin ons....around 7500
Fuel filters.....around 10K
Tranny fuilds.....25K
Diffs lube changes......25k

WE do the oil, fuel, and usually the tranny filter all together. ~10,000, or when the "Change Oil" message comes up, depending on how it's been driven. It takes us about an hour to do all three, and the cost usually less than $50. NAPA's got an awsome military discount on filters.

IME, once you change the fuel filter once, it gets easier each time, since you know what to do.

you say Napa has a military discount on filters?? how much and do you just ask for the military discount? (i usually do everywhere, even the PX, they don't usually laugh at that one)

We sell the fuel filters for $28 and the spin on Alli filters for $8. They take about 1/2 total to change them both out and the process is very easy. It is unbelievable what dealers collect for simple maintenance.

DSTRBD, you have a PM

Great! Yeah I told them to go ahead and do it, I figured there wasn't easy to change. Oh well live and learn...

Now regarding the fuel filter...this one does seem to make sense to everyone? Everytime I changed fuel filters on my car they always seem to be perfectly clean. Do you guys know what is involved in changing the fuel filter that the dealer charges one hour of labor to change??

Do a search on fuel filters and I'm sure you'll see a bunch of pics of the diesel filters cut open. Yes diesel fuel is nasty stuff and yes you should change them in the 15k or less interval. Even my wifes Trailblazer specs out 30,000 fuel filter changes(first one I changed at 38,000) after reading her manual.

Fact, it's just not that expensive to do, not that difficult, minimizes your chance of the fuel filter clogging and stalling(no bypass's built into fuel filters).

I don't know how long you can run on one filter before shutdown, but I do know that if I tried it, it would be at the worst possible time.

Yup, filters at cost, everything else 10% off. It's the cheapest place I've found to buy them at.

I believe that the dealer was just trying to line their pockets (maybe the service manager) The fuel filter is really easy to change. I did it my first time and it only took about 15 minutes. I bet the dealership actually pulls back the splash guard in the wheel well. The only thing I can recommend about the whole thing is to make sure you have a big enough wrench to get the WIF sensor off, or buy GMDieseltech's wrench.

I think the only problem I would have is to get the air out of the system..how do I prime it? I've never done a fuel filter change but I am coming up on it so I wanted to know how to prime it? I know u have to open up that screw or lil knob to open it up and let the air out but is there something else I have to push to get the air out?

See the DIY section for f/f replacement pics I posted nearly a year and a half ago to see all the steps, LLY varies a little, but still basically the same.

Filters, WIF wrenches, filter wrenches in stock..

gerrym, that sure seems really high for replacing the fuel filter. I just had the truck in for warranty work and while it was there I had them replace mine. It was $86.60 for it. I normally do it myself, but didn't have time. It is really simple to do. Good luck:ro)
