So, I called the local chevy dealership for a price on a oil change for my 05 6.6l dsl engine, they wanted $70 for the damn oil change..They also want $70 bucks for a fuel filter change....I then called Jiffy Lube and they also wanted $69.99....SCREW that....I'll be going to the local auto parts and picking up a oil filter for 10 bucks and a case of oil....Damn dealers and these other places really have their prices up there huh.....I guess its the price of a dsl engine? Who knows...anyways..just my input on these damn prices......

Have a great day!
Sam

Chev dealer here charges 40.00 to change the oil (I give them 11 qt Rotella) they provide the filter, lube it and check all fluid levels. Best recollection was 60 bucks to provide new fuel filter and install it. Used to do all this stuff myself but GD it, I'm getting a bit older (like a hell of a lot) and don't bend like I used to.

if you really want a laugh ask for a price quote for 4 shocks on an 03 Trailblazer(or some other vehicle of your choice). I was quoted over $500. Car X here I come.

You gotta love the dealer prices......

See my post in reply to you in the other subject. You do not want that 5w-30 stuff. You want either 5w-40 or 15w-40, with at least a CI-4 rating for a LLY engine with EGR.

I worked out a deal with the Firestone store down the street, I bring the oil and filter (Amsoil) he does the change for $15, talk to some of your local auto shops, they will help you out.

My dealer wanted $230 for oil/filter, fuel filter and tranny filter change... I about s**t when I heard that. I can do it all myself for under $60 with my grandpas discount at Napa for filters and oil.

Anybody figured out an easy way to prevent oil from leaking into their skid plate when they are changing it?

Take a look at a fumoto valve. Available here: http://www.gmdieseltech.com/store2/cart.php?target=product&action=view&product_id=16239&category_id=248

It makes the job much easier. The first time you change it is pain but once you drain it and put in the fumoto valve with a nipple you are set. With the valve it will stick out just enough to get it past the skid plate or you can attach a hose to the nipple just to make sure. To drain it the first time you might try a piece of foil or cardboard to keep it off the skid plate. I dropped the skid plate on mine the first time, only 4 bolts and easy to do, then put the fumoto in.

Hope this helps.

talking about the fumoto valve, how long does it take to drain the oil through the valve, as opposed to doing it the messy way?

My dealer charges $20 for oil change, filter change, lube job IF you bought the vehicle from them. They do it every 3K miles on gas, 5K on diesels. (only charge $10 on gas) at that price I can't afford NOT to have them do the service plus there is a record of the maintenance in case of warranty issues. Oil and filter are that much or more. Plus they run it through the wash and vacuum the inside when they are done.

Enough longer to have one more beer. When I use mine, the first thing I do is open the valve, and then spend the additional wait time taking care of other things.

The Fumoto is the only way to go. I always seem to make a mess when dealing with any oil drain, but the Fumoto has cured that problem.

The dealer in town here (not the dealer I bought it from, BTW) changed my oil last week for $53. I didn't provide them with anything, and they let me go back in the shop and supervise the lube monkey ( I was nice to him, because I used to be in his position, lol). Good to go. I prolly would've done it myself, but I was in dire need of a lube, oil, filter, and it was raining, so it was a no brainer.

I have never used it, but it certainly meets all the specs, and Valvoline has been making and marketing motor oil for decades.

Dude, if you're going to go with synthetic, check out the test results at http://www.amsoil.com/performancetests/g1971/index.aspx and see how Valvoline fares. Amsoil is at least a little, if not a whole lot, better in the results.

If you compare prices,

SAE 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel and
Marine Motor Oil

No. Pkg/Size Lbs. ea Credits, ea Cost, ea Retail, ea

AME-QT (1) quart bottle 2.1 2.65 4.30 5.60
AME-01 (12) quart bottles 24.9 31.80 49.20 66.00
AME-1G (1) gallon 8 11.40 17.05 22.15
AME-04 (4) gallons 32 45.60 65.00 87.00
AME-TP (1) 2.5 gallon 19.6 27.75 40.70 52.95

Valvoline: 9.87 per gallon

You see it's almost twice as much. It depends on what you can get it for in your area, of course.

Amsoil has been making extended drain synthetic all along, but it seems like the bigger companies are losing their market share and have jumped on the band wagon only because they have to.

I've used only valvoline on gassers for over 40yrs, but I thought I'd go to 15w40 Rotella on the Diesel at 5k intervals. I don't know if it's exactly the right stuff, but I do know it's one of the right ones... I've been using cheaper stuff in my tractors though.

I buy my oil and trans fluid at the White/ Allison service center in town here.

Delvac 15W40 $9.80 a gallon, or $35.00 for a case of four gallons, Allison spin on Filter $6.90, AC/Delco Oil filter at Murrays Discount Auto $2.39 . Two gallons Dextron III Trans fluid $21.52.

25,000 mile service, cost me $55.81 plus 1hr of my time.:blahblah: :grd:
