Has anybody done this before? I want to have the ability to take an air compressor or run a battery charger or something from the bed of my truck? What would be involved with doing this?

You need an inverter for small stuff or a generator for big stuff. http://www.realacpower.com/

I put the outlet in the cab, but in the bed would work, too.

That's a pretty cool deal, WAY over kill for what I need! Thanks for the post.

Can't you??? All I did was attach that outlet to the cutoff female end of an extension cord.

Or you can use a single

I have thought about something similar for my truck as well. I currently have a 400watt small and a 750 that I use inside the truck all the time on trips for laptop and other devices. But I also have a 1500watt I have considered mounting under the hood for other things. Dont know about running perm. wiring though. Easy enough to run heavy gauge extenision cord from under hood to what needs power

A inverter under the hood is a bad idea for heat they need moderately cool air around them , You do have to use heavy battery cables the further from the battery you mount the inverter .

Its not used while truck is driving. So there wont be that added heat. I now just pop the hood. hook up the jumper cable style clamps on the batt and run 25ft 12-14 gauge cord. Have been doing this on and off when needed for past 2 years.

I hadnt thought of putting an outlet in perm but that is a good idea. I might just have to do something like that. Would be useful.
