I was wondering whats the highest rpms you guys are running or heard of people running in a lb7 duramax. If over 4400 did you ever float the valves. Was there any damage. Just wondering i want to invest in a quad tuner and hook to the sled everyonce in awhile but am afraid of damaging the valve train

And no............we're not sure if it actually did hit that high, or it was just a fluke. I can say when it happened last week, we were going over 190kms(120mph) on the highway, and well, i'll let you fill in the blanks

What we are taught at school is that every diesel engine is supposed to run alright 1000 rpms over the factory governor. After that the valves are supposed to float.
Then the dreaded valve hitting piston. by then you have engine running off.
By then you have way more problems then just valves floating
Thank god i can just turn my key off and dont have to worry about the engine running off

Why is it diesels generally can't run at high RPM's? I know the powerband is real low, but my grandfather almost had a hear attack when I told him the Duramax can go up to 4800 or so under grade braking... The 4.6L gas engine in my car can safely turn 6500, If I where to upgrade the crank, rods, pistons and have it blueprinted, it could probably turn 7500+.
Edit: My father said it has to do with the speed at which the fuel ignites. Is that correct?

Thats a pretty good question.
I dont think its because of the fuel igniting
I have heard Dave Mitchel from enterprise engines or EEP running close to or over 9000 rpms
