My starter started to go in my truck a couple weeks ago. Turn the key and the radio and lights come on, i hear a clicking noise and it wont crank. My friends told me that its pretty easy to replace, just a couple bolts. I want to try to attempt this on my own. The starter came with instructions that seem pretty simple. I was wondering if some one could point me to how i could find my starter on my truck. Also if you have any advice for me.

Thanks

I had to do mine last year because my solenoid went. It wouldn't push the starter drive out fast enough so it would grind the flywheel...not a good thing.

Its on the right side of the engine, if you look inside the right front fender you can probably see it at the back. Three bolts on the solenoid, two on the starter, one on the clamp for the downpipe and out she comes. You're going to have to loosen off the downpipe to have room to rotate it out. I think mine took me about an hour and a half in the driveway. Not all that difficult, more of a PITA.

The starter is on the pass side of the truck, at the back of the engine, down low.

If you take off the passenger inner fender panel it will be much easier to work on.

Most important thing to do first is disconnect BOTH of your batteries negative cables.

Try to disconnect the postive cables from the starter before you take it out, and the bolts holding the starter in are going to be tight so a 1/2" breaker bar would help.

Good luck.

I would make sure it's the starter before I started the project. Weak battery? Battery cables? Elimate the easist fixes first.

Mine cost $120 after core return...not really worth it to fix or overhaul it. By the time you factor in the rebuild parts, your time to do it and going to three or four places to get the parts, cheaper and easier to just R&R as a unit.

120 sounds like a good deal,is that from gm or after market.

That is a good price-----IF it is a quality rebuilt starter. As stated above-- be sure to check everything before you replace the starter. Many rebuilds are much poorer quality than the original unit.

It came right out of the AC Delco box. I tried to price out a solenoid and if I remember right I think it was about $50 and an hours drive away. The starter was $120 and twenty minutes away.

Ithought the starter would be more than that from gm. SWEET. I agree with you guys about makeing sure that is my proplem first. and just replaceing the thing with a quality part one time.I live in Alberta.and parts seem exspensive.I lived in BC most of my life and new were I could get a good deal on parts. I didnt start this thread but thanks for answering my questions.

Thanks. Got it done this weekend. It was a PITA, but sure it saved me a lot of money. One of the bolts was really hard to get at, and had to unclamp the exhaust to get it out. When i went to bring the core back i had them test it, and it looks like the solenoid was the problem. There was some corrosion and one of the pieces busted off while trying to get the wires disconnected.
