I want to wire up a whelen led responder perm mount. Light will be mounted to a backrack. Want to use the upper pre wired switch for the power...I need a secondary switch to be able to change flash patterns...also want this switch to power up work/backup lights that i will also mount on the back rack...What type of switch do I use?? I really dont want a bunch of switches hanging off the dash..want to make this look as clean as possible..............

I would find a rocker switch that will snap into your dash somewhere that has an indicator that tells you when it's on and have it trigger a relay for your accessories. Pollak makes good switches or check Napa.

this upper prewired switch - are you saying the factory "work light". this can be used to power the light bar "work lights" thru a relay ( did this to another truck )

you will need 2 switches for the light bar - 1 for power and 1 for flash patterns.

check with your bar supplier - Whelen has alot of different switch setups that are good looking and small, easy to mount and use

Yes the pre wired switch in the upper consol is what i would use to power the light bar, but wasnt sure what type of secondary switch i would use to power the work lights and change flash patterns on the lightbar (work lights would be rear facing lights that i would switch on when plowing at nite)

what I did for the work lights was to find the wire under the dash that feeds the stock work light and tap into it. the power is negative switched so you will need a relay with NORMALY OPEN and NORMALY CLOSED contacts. ground one side of the coil and the other side to the tap wire from the stock work lights. use a seperate fused feed for the light bar work lights and feed the common spot on the relay, use the NORMALY CLOSED contact for the wire to feed the light bar work lights. when the truck is running the relay will be held in the "ON" postion because of the negative switching, when you turn the work lights "ON" the relay will go to its "NORMAL" postition closing the NC contacts. This sounds strange but trust me it works, took me a couple of tries to figure it out but thats the easiest way I found.

Do you have a wiring diagram for the bar that you could post up?? or a part number so I could look up the diagram??

Will be better to give you more accurate info on proper on/off and flash patterns. LED bars arent cheap and you dont want to put power to the wrong wires at the same time and go POOOFF!!!

The bar is a Whelen Led responder R2. I do not have a wiring diagram as the bar hasnt been delivered yet...Ordered it Tuesday, so I'm sure with the holidays it will be here after the 1st....

Yes POOFF would be bad...........

I looked up the instructions at the Whelen site and it looks like the R2 has a cigarette lighter for power and there is a button on the plug in for pattern changes.

Now you say you have ordered work lights out the back, so you may have to "hard wire" the unit in, for all operations. This is a very basic unit and install of wiring will be very simple to wire. now actually installing the wires and switches....., that may be a bit harder.
