I have ordered my new Duramax and am looking at a good alarm/immobilizer type unit. My old truck had a GM unit that killed the starter and fuel pump. The dealer didn't seem to be up to speed on what is available. Does anyone have a preference or "what not to buy"? One dealer I went to had a unit that used a proximity fob on the key ring but they would not give me the brand name or any info. All suggestions welcomed.

You could add something but your truck has passlock II already. This makes it pretty much unstealable. Nothing is fool proof but if they are going to steal your truck now they would probably use a tow truck.

In my '02 I have a Clifford. Forget the model, but it is a higher middle of the line system. Extras added were a tilt switch (for tow truck) and glass breakage sensor, and a back up battery siren. System has a starter kill, aswell.

Check with your insurance company and see if they have a system approved for a reduced rate, for you.

Actually bypassing passlock II with the use of an ohmmeter only takes about 25 seconds. A No Key Required Bypass Kit costs 22 bucks and can be plugged into your truck in seconds an voila the thief has a new truck that doesn't require a key at all. A good aftermarket alarm is a good investment, battery back up is good and a 2 way pager with engine kill is the real way to go. No better theft deterrent than a screamin diesel owner running at you packing a .45 IMHO.

Sounds like you know your stuff -- maybe a little to well??? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

I've always thought that if a thief want's your stuff - he's gonna get it. But, you can definately make it harder on him!

Actually you are wrong. They would need the key to get the original resistance. Not that easy. Trust me I deal with the EVERY day. Do you really think GM would be that dumb?

I may be, this is one area I am glad to say I am no expert, if I was maybe I wouldn't be driving a 94.....(just kidding)

Viper makes a nice one. Its called the responder. Does remote start. It can control windows and such. Has a cool little remote that indicates when your truck is running, or not, with the remote start and it notifies you if a sensor goes off. I don't think you can get it as a do it yourself, but there are others out there that have the same functionality that can be had.
I'm happy with mine and its warranted for life.

I still like my idea of an alarm that sets off a halon system into the cab.

Go ahead and get inside. :) At best it'll make you high and wierd, worst you're dead. I like the idea... and like anyone's going to not get out if the cab gets flooded with some gas while you're breaking in?

Another vote for a remote start/security system. Very nice on cold mornings to have the diesel "up and running" when I walk out the door. I have the "Code Alarm" system made by DEI which I believe makes several of the major brands on the market. Purchased at/installed by Circuit City, serviced nationwide by CC. They're upgrading the glass sensor to a better one at no charge. Good customer service! They are getting quite a bit of free PR from ol' JJ.

It has the starter kill/disable feature and all that other fancy stuff to. Spoolin Turbo: Get professional :help: ):h Later. JJ :)

A good installer helps the most. I wouldn't take my ride to CC or BB for nothing. I GF took her car to CC for a car alarm and a head unit I had to redo the H\U. In addition, the car alarm and the theft system in her car conflicts sometimes and it take a few tries to start the car. Its her fault to she needs to just take it in for them to fix it, but the installer is only there 2 days a week oh well it’s her car. I have a Sidewinder and it works well, but I think I get some electrical interference sometimes and the remote wont work very well. My GFs Viper doesn't have that problem it seems, but I have more range. Either way I would get one with a pager of some sort.

USUALLY the flashing LED light would be enough of a deterrent, I would think. Theres enough vehicles out there without alarms in them. Why would they want to bother with yours?

Just a thought.

I agree Max Owner, the flashing LED is 99% of the battle. Why steal yours when it could have an alarm when the next one beside it doesn't?

Thanks for the input. My old truck has a GM alarm that kills the fuel pump and electronics as well as the normal incessant noise. I think I'll search for a name brand high quality unit to further disable and assist the OEM devise.

When I bought mine the unit the dealer offered was called "Identity" It cost 399.00. I bought it and it seemed more of a pain in the ass then it was worth. If there were times you left the keys in it then tryed to start it with out taking them out and shaking it, it would not start. They ended up giving me my money back and I still have the unit.

Its a fuse that plugs in the Fuse box under the hood that has a wire coming out of it. On your keyring there is what looks like another remote that has something inside that activates the fuse and lets the truck start (There is also a battery inside). Considering putting it back in but haven't done so yet. Hope this helps ya.

I've been working on an idea...How about a motion sensor-activated system that discharges a 10% CS/CN fog in the cab after a 60-90 second delay. It would also discharge automatically if the vehicle exceeded 8 mph without being turned off. Works independently from the vehicle's alarm.

Legal complications aside, what do you think?

Hmmmm, my $40k truck rolling down the street with the driver (thief) passed out . . .

Hence the halon system plan. Turn a valve when you park... instead of engine compartment, its pasenger compartment... CS/CN is great but won't kill you.

Hmmmm, my $40k truck rolling down the street with the driver (thief) passed out . . .I've seen CS used many times. The recipient gets overwhelmed and drops to his knees. I've never seen them pass out. I'm sure the Army doesn't have recriuts falling out unconcious left and right. I'm sure they would stop the truck before they bailled out. Hey the truck is still there.

Just an idea...
