: B&W ball that extends 4" to rear: Opinions?
DuckhunterInTN 03-29-2005, 11:54 AM I am going to install a turnover hitch in my 04 swb 2500HD and am thinking about putting a crossbed toolbox (and maybe a headache rack....anyone running this setup??). I saw the ball hitch that B&W offers that spaces the ball 4" to the rear of the bed....how would this pull? What would be the disadvantages?
Thanks guys.
i had it and ended up selling it, only because I covnerted my fifth to GN and the adapter i used had a 5" offset. for towing GN trailers it was OK, although IIRC it lowered the weight rating. If possible, I would stick with the original.
DuckhunterInTN 03-29-2005, 12:41 PM Did it cause it to pull worse?
How much space do you think I will need between the arm of the gooseneck and a crossbed toolbox in order to avoid contact in off-road applications?
did not pull worse that I could tell, I just liked having the coupler sit right over the hitch, no added stress or strain from the offset. if you are not going to haul too heavy, close to max weight it might be worth a try. GN rated for 30K, but the 4" offset coupler reduces that to 20K, what are you looking to tow ?
As far as the tool box goes, the more room the better but I would try to keep at least 8 inches of clearance at the heighest point on the GN, where the toolbox may contact. is the toolbox low profile ? If you have not purchased yet, you may consider a more RV friendly version (lower overall height, wedge shape in the middle, etc) need more info on the trailer to help more (what type of coupler, any off set ont he GN arm and where, etc)
DuckhunterInTN 03-29-2005, 03:02 PM The toolbox is a RKI crossover box that sits 7.5-9" on top of the rail, so it is a pretty tall toolbox. Several inches higher than a normal crossove box (Delta, UWS, Better Built, etc).
I have already purchased the toolbox, my only question is whether to add the headache rack which would push the box back approximately 4" in the bed.
take some measurements of the toolbox, approx how deep into the bed, add dimensions fo the headache rack with some wiggle room and how far is all that to the front housing of the hitch ?
DuckhunterInTN 03-29-2005, 04:45 PM Based on a 78" bed
The front of the ball being at 46.5" from the rear of the bed
And the toolbox, headache rack, crossbrace combo being 26.5"
I will have 5.0" of space between the crossbrace behind the box (that will add to protect the box from my 4-wheeler) that will be at bed level. I will have 7.5" of space between the toolbox (sitting about 7-8" above the bed rail) and the front of the hole for the ball hitch.
DuckhunterInTN 03-29-2005, 04:46 PM That is of course the best case scenario, which means the bed is actually 6.5' long and does not consider the added width of the actual arm on the trailer.
your going to be close, maybe have to watch steep driveways, but if off road is not too undulating, you may be OK just keeping an eye on things and going slowly. If you can live without the headache rack, you will not have any problems at all. with the height of the tool box, you will have to be careful
DuckhunterInTN 03-29-2005, 04:57 PM Yeah, I can live without the headache rack (I am not entirely certain that I want it on either way).
I will definitely give it up if adding it will cause me problems or will make me have to keep a nervous eye on my trailer when off road. (which will be likely, as this will mainly be used to carry tractors and equipment, not too much highway use).
