HI,
I am planning to take out the engine from a 1982 Chevy 6.2 Diesel van so that oil pan, head gaskets, fly wheel can be changed. Is it possible to take out the engine only without taking out the transmission. If yes is it going to come out from the front or from the side doors? What other planning should I do other then all the basic tools and the engine hoist.
Thanks!

When you get it out and have the oil pan off, do the rear main
bearings & rear main seal too!

The transmission should be take out, it bolts to the crossmember and then the heavy end to the engine, so if you leave it in, you risk ripping it off the mount...you can support it, but then the vehicle is stuck where it is. and if the jack stand should fall...then you have a heavy shock load on the trans and the mount

You could leave the tranny in and run a ratchet tie down strap around the frame rails and under the front of the tranny so that u won't have to leave a jack or stand under it. I've done it many times and it works quite well. :beerchug:

Hi Anyone how to take out engine from a van (after taking out the front grill, radiator, and everything else). Will it come out from the front or does it has to come out from the side passenger or driver door? This van is Diesel 6.2 Chevy 85 Van
Thanks!

My understanding is that it comes out the front.
I don't think it will fit through the doors,
but that's a good place for a 2nd engine lift to suspend
things while you work.

it comes out the front.
pull the intake off and plug the ports first.
ratchet strap on the trans like mentioned works well, though i do pull the lines/d/shaft and unbolt the rear mount to slip it back 3 more inches or so to make the engine removal easier.
