: Warranty/Chip Question
JhnZ71 03-29-2005, 09:09 AM I took my truck to the dealer for the blue smoking problem. Today the service manager is calling me and asking me if i have any "computer mods". I lied and told him I dont. Is the Banks Six Gun really untraceable like they say,i removed it and the switch.:badidea:
lakingslayer 03-29-2005, 09:38 AM Did you remove the K&N, guages and exhaust? Those things may have made the SM suspicious.
JhnZ71 03-29-2005, 09:46 AM i took the K&n off,but left the guages and exhaust. It would have cost too much to remve those, can they prove it though?
Fred G 03-29-2005, 09:51 AM The Banks doesn't change anything in the PCM, so it's not traceable there. About the only thing noticeable is hard shifting, without the extra torque the trans will shift really hard for a few days. I had this happen when I sent my six-gun in for reflash. After 2-3 days the trans starting shifting "softer" again.
I don't think gauges and exhaust are grounds for warranty denial. Exhaust maybe if it's throwing a code related to the turbo or cat, but otherwise....no connection at all...
And you didn't lie....you don't have any "computer mods".....of course you ARE modifying the signal SENT by the computer.....but that's not the question that was asked.....):h
JhnZ71 03-29-2005, 09:57 AM thanks, so they cannot prove it...whew! About the hard shifting, cant i just say that i pull really heavy.
Fred G 03-29-2005, 09:00 PM I think a sharp tech could still deduce a power-adder from harsh shifts. But yes I suppose if you say you were just pulling heavy loads it might be dismissed due to that. And even if it's driven a few miles in stop and go traffic, the harsh shifting will start to go away.
ACCinc. 03-31-2005, 12:37 AM The new computers on all trucks can tell if you have had any upgrades. the computer moniters all the functions of the engine max boost, speed, RPM etc.If the dealer wanted to nail your a$$ they could. I really depends on the dealer and if the upgrades really did the damage. Technically they can void your warranty because you didn't use GM motor oil, but I don't think they will be that picky.
GMC-2002-Dmax 03-31-2005, 01:08 AM They cannot detect a plug in box.........
As far as gauges, you tow a heavy load, GM put in a full set of gauges including a transmission temp gauge.
Tell your service manager that the addition of gauges to monitor boost and EGT is just a smart move and question him why GM did not offer them from the factory..........throw the ball back at him.
Then tell the service manager that an engine is an airpump, with the price of Diesel you were told that a better air filter and exhaust could free up a mpg or two and lower your EGT's while towing.
If he has any other questions...........lie............;)
I have never been asked about the gauges, exhaust, or AFE intake.........except once............but never after I told the Service Manager what I posted.

JhnZ71 03-31-2005, 02:23 PM so can the chevy computer detect if i had a six gun, because my dealer is preatty anal
duramaxdiesel 03-31-2005, 04:34 PM Don't sweat it. You'll be fine.
msievz7 04-03-2005, 11:12 AM I've got a 2003 Chevy CC/SB w/Allison and the full Banks Six Gun Bundle. I took it in to get an ABS sensor checked out and when I went to pick it up, the service mgr. had ordered a PCM for the truck too! He said that when they hooked up the computer it said the PCM needed replaced. He then proceded to ask if it was chipped. I told him it was, which to my surprise he didn't really care. I forgot to turn the selector knob to 1 when I took it in, so I called Banks and they said that even with the knob in the 1 position, the dealer's cpu will still give a fault. The banks tech told me that you have to actually unplug one of the 8-pin connectors from the module and install the supplied jumper wire. Just thought I would put that out there.

Steve Cornell 04-03-2005, 11:47 AM Maybe I'm just too ethical but if GM states that power adders will void your warranty then if you add a power adder maybe you should just accept the fact that you have no warranty.
All this lying and cheating makes me wonder what this country has come to, I know GM has deep pockets and they charge big prices for these trucks but I would guess that your the same folks that drive these prices up by cheating and lying on insurance claims, filing law suits, etc.
I feel the same about fuel prices, I hate to pay $70 to fill up my truck but "I" decided to purchase this truck, you guys that piss & moan about paying a few cents extra to fill up your $50,000 truck are a bunch of hypocrites, if you can't afford it get rid of it and buy a rice burner that gets 50 mpg.
I hope all your warrantys get voided and fuel hits $5 \ gallon.:D
Sorry, I guess I'm in a crabby mood this morning and needed to vent, I feel better now LOL :)
neverenuf 04-04-2005, 01:23 PM I took the Banks out when I got my injectors replaced last week. After the work was done the service manager asked me if I had any aftermarket performance inhancers installed. I was truthful and said no.):h I didn't offer to tell him I just took them off. It was hard to understand his angle when he asked the question, why after the service was done? He then proceeded to tell me that it was the strongest stock Duramax he's ever ridden in. Don't know if he was blowing smoke or what, really I don't think he believed me.
Burnin Mad Max 04-05-2005, 04:15 AM Technically they can void your warranty because you didn't use GM motor oil, but I don't think they will be that picky.
Not true!!! By law if you were required to use their oil or any other fluids for that matter the Federal govt., says they have to supply it to you... for free!
A poor tech could deduce mods by looking at the guages alone but the law says that they have to be able to prove it. Not only prove it but prove that the mods were the cause of the failure. Almost no dealer will spend the finances or the time going after one customer in a court case. Instead stealers like to use scare tactics by having the service writer convince you your in the wrong. It is up to you to call them on their bluff. A good stealer (oxymoron?) will not try this unless they really think your trying to pull one over them. On the other hand if your are modded and prone to beating on the equipment why should the factory be coughing up the dough to fix it?
JhnZ71 04-06-2005, 11:08 AM Ok, I got my truck back from the dealer about a week and a half ago. It doesnt seem to smoke as much, I thought that switching from Powerservice Diesel Fuel Supplement to Diesel Kleen might help, I havent seen any smoke since a put it in? Is this just a coincidence?? Can injectors get dirty and leak?? hmm....
staticx04 04-06-2005, 08:48 PM Wut are you guys with the edgew/attiude monitor doin when you takin it in for service. Wut are you tellin them about the egt probe? I was thinkin of tryin to find a bolt to put in there in case i gotta take it in. Or just leavin it in there and i'm goin to put a egt guage in. Someone please enlightenment.
Ridge Runner 04-06-2005, 09:49 PM I take mine out, put a plug in the hole. If they ask i'll tell them was going to
install a pyro but haven't gotten around to it, have been sick. Have only been in one time and it was for a left seal.:grd:
acehi 04-07-2005, 12:29 PM I leave my probe in. I just coil up the wire and zip tie it out of the way. I have never been asked about it but if they were to ask I would tell them that the previous owner had an EGT gauge on the pilar, he took out the gauge but left the wire.
About what Steve said earlier during his MOOD swing. I am one that will add as much power as I can afford to have what I want. If something honestly goes wrong that I know was a fault of my add-on I will normally fess up and fix it myself. But for known problems such as the injectors and other warrenty work, there is no way to prove it was my add-ons so I will take it in and have it fixed. I do agree that a lot of companies charge outrageous prices because of cheeters, liers, and they expect lawsuits. I will normally fess up to my mistakes but I fix them myself. I won't pay someone else to fix it unless I don't have the skills to do it. The only thing on my truck I would not know anything about is my transmission. Never worked on one and probably never will.
Now if the fuel prices do go up to $5 gal. then I think my MOOD swings would kick in and I would have to go find Steve.
staticx04 04-07-2005, 08:28 PM I agree with ^ 110%
