I have a new Sierra Dmax on order and am kicking around the purchase of the extended warranty. I have never bought one for anything ever. If I review the repair costs of my last 3 trucks, repair costs would have made it at least a break even deal on all of them. I know it's a crap shoot.

I know the price of them is negotiable. I did not get one, I guess when the time comes I will become a diesel tech...

IMO it is usually Hype and Scare tactic "That fuel pump is $2200.00 would you wanna pay that?" the salesman would say, just sign here. :deal: But fact of the matter is that alot of stuff is powertrain or emissions warranty so you have quite a few years on your big ticket items.

Extended warranty is just like insurrance, you're betting it's gonna break and they're betting it won't. The answer is how much risk can you handle.

Just got the latest update to Mitchel1 at the shop, finally got 04 wiring diagrams, 05's basically the same. Started looking at how & where I want to tie on the alarm & remote start. Guess what, this thing is a network on wheels. The window switches now command the BCM which sends the command on a single data wire to a module in each door to activate the window motors. The same to the lock module. The same to the dome lightmodule. There are data wires running to modules everywhere. Then you move on the the DMax & Allison - nothing cheap there. How about an electronic transfer case. Almost forgot the ECM. We could go on & on.

I'm in the auto business and turn a wrench everyday. I buy parts wholesale and it's a very rare occassion that anyone but me works on my car, truck, Harley or boat. But guess what - I bought the warranty. Figured out the time/ mileage package and went for the 5yr/100k GMAC Warranty. Buy GMAC - don't waste your money on the aftermarket warranty companies. Odds are they won't be around when you need them. It was around 2200. I'm betting that with the way it's built, all the electronics, and the work the truck's going to do (not to mention maybe a peformance mod or 2)- that at the end of 5yrs I'll have gotten more than my $2200 worth.

Bottom line - it's a gamble. How lucky do you feel?

On my last 3 GM's, 84 pontiac 6000 (transmission died at 180K) 87 G-20 Van (sold at 160K, still running good) 95 S-10 4x4 (sold to my son at 110K) the extended warranty would have cost me big time. None were in for any repairs till after 100K, just normal maintenance. Van at 120K needed some steering wheel work (<$200) and a water pump at 100K (<$50 to fix myself). S-10 new fuel pump at 120K ($400- drop the tank to replace fuel pump) and pontiac was not in the shop at all (did need new water pump at 100+K, again <$50). I expect my duramax to be just as good, if not better.

When you buy an extended warranty....5 yr, 100,000 mi, doesn't the time and mileage begin from mile 1 and day 1? Meaning you already get 3 yr/36,000 and the extended warranty does not start when the 3/36 ends? So, you really only get 5 years and 100,000 anyway?

I'm going to check those details a little further. Here is the way I look at it.

95 Blazer--9 months after warranty was up it cost me $1450.00 to have the ABS system replaced.

2000 Blazer--Bought it with a free 50,000mile/5year warranty but had it in shop many times after normal 36/3 would have been up.

99 Silverado--with 69000 miles. I have laid out over 1600.00 on this truck after the warranty so far. Water pump now has a small leak and will need replaced soon.

Like I said, It would have probably been at least a break even deal foe me as far as the cost of the ext.warranty and the cost of repairs. I usually keep my trucks 5 to 7 years.

It's a tough call.......sure as hell if I buy the warranty for the new Dmax, I'll never need it.

Truck is going to depreciate at 500 to 600 bucks a month. Get rid of the thing at 2 or 3 year intervals and put the extended warranty money in your account toward purchase of new unit.

I got an extended on an '01 Silverado "Certified" used vehicle. It cost me $2K. I am into them for something over $6K right now. I sat there in the dealership a LONG time and thought about it before I got it. I sure am glad I did.

From what I understand, there's no such thing as a genuine GM extended warranty. I called my local dealer and talked to a very knowledgeable service rep that said the GMAC extended warranty is still handled by a third party. I have heard it's the best one out there, but I don't think it's a true GM warranty like the original factory warranty is.

If you buy a Dmax/Alley combo, beware the tranny is covered for only 36months/36000 miles. I was lucky(not really considering) i started out without a extended warrantee:badidea: (just the GM certified used 3month/3000mile) guess what...the alley gave up on me 2 times since i had it :wtf1: (only had it 4 months so far) the first time was 2 weeks after i got it. I reconsidered the warrantee very quickly & was able to still add it to the truck after the fact. Now it's only the basic warrantee up till 100000,...but i mainly bought it for the tranny. I paid $1700.00 outright for it. The way i figure it..thats alot cheaper than a tranny rebuild...oh yea..it's 100.00 deductable per service. Still SUX that the "Rock Solid" ally bellied up ...Twice already. Yea, i'm betting it will do it again..& No i do not dog it either. Funny how i heard nothing but good about the alley...Till I Bought One!!! My luck:rant:

I got the same general drift when reading the material I got from the dealer. You are paying for double coverage:mad: I would really like a longer warranty but not a sleazy rip-off. My small town dealer did not push an extended warranty or seem to think it was a good idea(HINT). Also insurance is not usually negoibable. (RED FLAG #2). GM should really think about how these scams effect a new purchaser and their opinion of the company.-:t

True, if you purchase your warranty when you first buy your truck. I recently purchased a GMPP $100 deductible from Black Pontiac Cadillac GM outlet. My truck had 23,600 miles when I bought it. It has added 4 years/72,000. I paid $1,670. Cheapest internet price I could find and cheaper than my dealer.

Yes, it is a gamble, but these trucks are very expensive for parts and labor.

WARNING: If you wait until after 24,000 miles is on your truck, the GMPP extended warranty nearly doubles.

After 3 tranny's, a computer, water pump, and steering pump in my last vehicle, all at my expense, I feel VERY comfortable knowing that I am covered with my extended warranty. Plus, when I sell this truck at about 80,000 miles, potential buyers will have the peace of mind knowing that I'm not getting rid of it due to "future expensive issues", as there will be some warranty left, and mine is transferable.

I didn't think twice about purchasing the extended warranty--I just bought it and didn't even look at the price (about $2800 I think, plus I paid extra to push to 100k miles rather than 75k, or something). I knew though when I bought it I intended to keep it well beyond the payments (5yr @ 0.00%!). I've had the rig in several times for minor stuff during the standard warranty and it's a great feeling to know I can keep taking it in. I'm at 30k now 2 years later but have loads of time to get stuff done. btw: the line used on me was "Ya know, if that electronic cluster goes out or the ECM malfunctions, that's gonna cost ya more than the warranty!". It worked.

I bought extended warranties on both my Duramax and my wifes LeSabre . Neither were GM. When buying the LeSabre, I told the saleslady "Don't GM make quality vehicles. After paying 20 grand plus for a car, it should be dependable". That stumped her for a little while. But I did buy the warranty on it and my truck as well since both have so much electronics. I bought it on the truck because the truck had 35900 miles when I bought it. I have used the warranty on the car and really had no hassles on getting payment. The dealer called the company and the company gave them a credit card number to put it on . But I have heard horror stories about trying to get them to pay off and there was a company that filed bankruptcy and supposedly let a lot of customers holding the bag. PM me if you would like to know the names , or I can post them here, I just don't have them with me right now.

I also bought my truck on the 60 month 0% interest program. My dealer offers an extended service agreement that brings the whole vehicle to 60 months/100,000 miles for $1945.00 ($200.00 deductable after 36,000 miles). If there are no claims after the 3 years/36,000 miles then I get a refund of $1900.00! With all of the electrical gee wiz stuff I thought this was a fairly good investment. So far I have had the Ali rebuilt at 23,000 miles after it limped in a totally stock configuration, since that repair there have been no issues and I have added a juice/attitude. So as I approach 36,000 miles in the next few weeks I feel comfortable that the original bugs were worked out and look forward to collecting my $1900.00 in a few years. This will then be used as a deposit for tranny upgrades so that I can turn the Juice Up! :muahaha:
