: ATS turbo, studs and KD 20% injectors are in
Micheal Tomac 03-29-2005, 12:06 AM Eric did a great job on the install even with a rookie D/A mechanic (me) helping out. But I think we created a monster. With the bigger turbo and bigger nozzles the truck is scary fast on the street. It was hard to drive easy for the first 75-100 miles while the fluids were stabilizing and the bearings in the turbo were seating. Then it was WFO, hang on and listen to the turbo making 50psi of boost. The streetability with this thing is amazing if you can keep the tires hooked and don't mind turbo whistle.
duramaxdiesel 03-29-2005, 12:10 AM Good for you Mike! I hope to upgrade my turbo too sometime in the near future.

Micheal Tomac 03-29-2005, 09:42 AM it feels as strong as the truck did on nitrous if not stronger, 1/4 mile ET and MPH will tell for sure.

ecc_33 03-29-2005, 08:39 PM mike how much does it still smoke. What chips are you running with the turbo. Does the turbo have a lot of lag. How much boost are you getting. Does it sound like a jet. Do you get turbo bark. Have you ran it with the nitrous. Could it use more fuel or do you get enough with just the injectors and chips.

Coming from a guy with "A cop asked me once while he had me pulled over,"Where's the fire at"? I would have liked to have said, in them eight holes under my hood! " in his sig.
Maybe you pull your head out and see the point I am trying to make, with the pedal down on a fast vehicle it is hard to monitor all the inputs and keep it pointed in the right direction. If you have ever driven a vehicle that had enough power to lose control at high speeds you might understand what warp speed is.

John DiMartino 03-30-2005, 08:32 AM Mike, how much EGT relief did this turbo give you? My cousins stacked dmax gets in egt trouble pretty quickly with the stock turbo on the higher settings. When you studded, did you pull the heads/replace the head gaskets,or remove the bolts indivdually and replace them one at a time? From your SOP meter,it sounds like you picked up 100+hp between the mods.:ro) The turbo will really help your diesel only performance.

I've seen a max of 1600 degrees where before I'd see a max of 1800. But remember I have more fuel now with the injectors. We replaced one bolt at a time with a stud. I still have 100K+ mile headgaskets. I didn't have HG issues before and none of the bolts were rusty that came out so we didn't think it was worth replacing them.
Mike ,Give me a shout. Mark

Yes, but I haven't ran it yet with the turbo. When Eric gets back from vacation I'll hook up the tech2 and see how my rail pressure is now that I have bigger nozzles with the Quad & Juice stack and then with the Duramaximizer turned on with the Quad and Juice stack.

ratlover 03-31-2005, 09:51 AM I used to say my 486 was bad assed and the hottest thing since sliced bread
Edit: Sorry to bring this farther OT Mike. When we going to see some vids of this monster and are you going to bring here over to the grove anytime soon? When you taking here to the track? No more smoking out intersections for you though:damnit1: So you made a comment about thinking you may have not needed the studs??? I have wondered about that becasue guys are running tons of spray on the stock gaskets and bolts.....what are your thoughts? I guess I dont see the diffeence in air becasue of lotsa spray or a bigger turbo, except a turbo is always there......
Micheal Tomac 03-31-2005, 10:10 AM Even though my other gauge only went to 30 psi, on spray I wasn't seeing more than 35 because it would dip down in the high twenties after a shift. Now with the bigger turbo I'm seeing 50psi of boost. I'm not sure what the cylinder pressure differences are between my previous setup and my current setup but I'm guessing I have way more cylinder pressure now. Until someone tries the bigger turbo w/o headstuds we won't know how much the stock gaskets and stock bolts will take.
ratlover 03-31-2005, 10:13 AM I thought it was about cylineder pressure and it would be fairly close regardless if it was a ton of spray or if it was just a big turbo?
carterkraft 03-31-2005, 10:17 AM So you made a comment about thinking you may have not needed the studs??? I appreciate all the kind words, but I don't need any help. I could comment on the headstud question but how could I possibly know what the limit is being a Ford guy and all.
As for not having a Chevy I have left one out, I have a Chevy truck, it's not a diesel but it is tubbed with a 4 link turning 32*17" slicks. It runs 7.0's in the 1/8 mile. Not to many 82' ElCaminos running around.
Sorry for dragging the post OT Mike, good luck and hope you kick Censored this year.
Micheal Tomac 03-31-2005, 10:19 AM There are ways to measure cylinder pressure while under full load but the equipment is expensive.
dmaxalliTech 03-31-2005, 10:29 AM Its cheaper to take preventive measures (studs) then to replace gaskets time and time again.
Damn it, now I am posting on vacation!
Micheal Tomac 03-31-2005, 10:35 AM not to mention you have to buy new bolts every time because the stockers are a one time use TTY bolt
ratlover 03-31-2005, 10:40 AM If you want to continue to talk crap send me a PM. Why withhold all this wonderfull info you have? To "hurt" me and all the other guys that give you ****? WTFE:rolleyes:
Think job security Eric! You should be trying to get people to push the limits of the stock bolts and gaskets LOL
ratlover 03-31-2005, 10:42 AM Oh yes the torque to yeild bolts. How much those dudes cost for a set? Probably not cheap i would guess. Probably make me think the studs aint a bad price. Although I know what I have bought a set of BBC head studs for that were a "special" set for aftermarket heads and they wernt any were near the 800$, I would put em on but it just seems like they are gouging ya BIG time
dmaxalliTech 03-31-2005, 10:50 AM Phil, stock head bolts are only about 3.00 ea. compared to the 22.00 or so for the studs each.
Pulling the heads off isnt something I want to have to do.. Nor would the customer want to pay the ~40 hrs of book labor for it.
ratlover 03-31-2005, 10:55 AM How many hour job is it to just swap studs for bolts for most normal guys on an LB7? A BBC or a SBC would be gravy but I'm thinking a LB& would suck blow and swallow in comparison.
Mackin 03-31-2005, 06:06 PM I remember when someone's sig said Quadzilla makes the power and Suncoast gets it to the ground. Trippin 03-31-2005, 11:36 PM There are ways to measure cylinder pressure while under full load but the equipment is expensive.
I saw a company do some dynamic in cylinder pressure measurement on a dyno years ago, using a piezo electric crystal type sensor. It was the coolest thing to see a P/V diagram related to crank angle on an 8,000 rpm SBC.
nwpadmax 04-01-2005, 08:06 PM shurely theres some one here smart enough to calculate the additional pressure..............all I can remeber from theremogoddamnits is PV=nrt
Hey, I remember thermodydammits...
PV=NRT is the ideal gas law, all you have to do is remember that T is absolute temperature (in Kelvin) and P is pressure in atmospheres.
Back of the envelope, 1 atm = 14.7 psi, so let's say for shiz and giggles you're normally running 29.4 psi (2 atm) and now you're at 50 psi (3.4 atm).
Then just go P1V1 = P2V2....or P1(18) = P2(1) (for 18:1 compression) and you get 2*18 = 36 atm (529 psi) vs 3.4*18 = 61 atm or 899 psi. This is at TDC BEFORE the fuel injection event.
According the diesel cycle, burning is said to be "a constant pressure event," although that doesn't sound right to me off the top of my head.
Gotta go crack the books some more.... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/help2.gif
Betcha Fingers knows.
Fellow geeks, check out http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/thermo/diesel.html
nwpadmax 04-01-2005, 08:21 PM OK, I actually read the link that I posted....duh!
Adiabatic compression pressure is figured that the ratio of the pressure at TDC to the pressure at the bottom of the intake stroke = (compression ratio)^1.4.....which = 57.
So let's try this again, if we're at 2 atm boost, the final pressure is 2*57 = 114 atm = 1676 psi. Doing the same with 3.4 atm you get 2849 psi.
Anyone got any better ideas???
