Anyone removed this with EFI Live to make the Duramax sound like a real diesel? If so, is it safe and how long have you been running it like this? I would really like to do this to mine. I heard it sounds relly good! Alot like a 6.0 powerjunk.

Your right, youll have a louder, harder to crank, gutless "powerstroke in a GM chasis" running/sounding truck. I would say IMO, a quiet diesel is a happy diesel. Have I turned it off, yes...but I haven't heard or seen personally anything that makes me want to keep it off. If you want a D-max to sound good just bring up the RPM's. :D

Until I see otherwise, I am keeping it on IMO.

Its louder than a cold 7.3 IDI......annoying as hell, ive done it just to see and made it a mile before retuning......IMO, leave it on, it there for a reason.

Anybody else tried it yet?

I tried it for about 2 miles... way too loud.

Yep...I tried it...and like the others, I did not lake the "rattle trap" sound.

Its alot more involved than just turning it off. I did it to see what it would do to mileage. ran it for about 4 months. You have to adjust about 5 different tables. Good luck with the timing, I can give you some pointers to a good starting point, but it will take you at least that long to get it back timed right. You'll have to change the cranking tables, as it is a PIG to start a d-max W/O pilot injection in any weather under about 30 degrees...might as well buy new batteries now, also you'll have to completely rescale the timing map as the engine responds differently to a single injection event VS. multiple injection events. You'll not be able to hear yourself think over the rattle...remember this is a direct injection engine...not IDI and you know how loud the old 6.5's are. And after all of this...my results showed no comparable change in mileage or power. In fact It seemed to be slightly low on power and slugish to light the turbo.

But you do what you like...I won't advise it though.

All of the IC Engines books I've read suggest that the residual flame left from the pilot injection is extremely efficent for the main injection burn.

I, like Mike_S, had to find out for myself if I could increase mpg by turning off the pilot injection; after a ton of tuning a logging; nadda... I never removed the pilot at idle or low RPMs, but rather I had it cutting out over 1400RPMs.

Makes a ton of noise, but other then that I couldn't see any benefit.

For what it's worth, I think your tuning time could be better spent tinkering with the pilot timing and pilot pulse width ;) As 06Dmaxpwr a quiet diesel is a happy diesel.
