I have just purchased my first diesel, a 1995 1500 with the 6.5 Turbo Diesel. Because I will be doing some towing I wanted to install a transmission temperature and turbo boost gauge. I have been reading the forum and done some searching as well. From what I understand the easiest way to install the transmission temp guage is using the test port on the transmission. Does anyone have a picture or could you describe where to find the port? Also as far as the boost gauge what is best method to install it? I plan on having the intake off of the truck to open it up a little. (It is a S engine). Any pictures or descriptions would be very helpful. Thanks for helping out a newbie.

Forget the Transmission gauge for the moment, install a pyrometer first, thats the most important aftermarket gauge you can add. You mentioned pulling, well that speaks for itself, you'll cook your engine before the transmission w/o an Exhaust Temperature Gauge.

I have spent a few hours looking at the site. I hate to ask to be spoon fed, but I really haven't found the information I'm asking about. Thanks again.

The only threaded fitting that could be removed is just below the input sensor. I have no idea if this is a service port, my manual doesn't say.
Don't S engines have a place on the lower intake for the boost tap?

Don't S engines have a place on the lower intake for the boost tap? Mine didn't. I took off the upper intake and drilled/tapped the hole in the rear side that points at a 45 degree angle towards the passenger side. Look here:

Thanks for all the help. Is the tap you used a 1/8 inch or a 1/4 inch?

What bit do you use to drill the hole for the 1/8NPT?
I found someone that had an old card that came with a tap and die set and it said to use an "R" bit. I have never heard of an "R" bit, but I am sometimes a little ignorant when it comes to certain things.

Don't install a temp gauge for the trans in the trans. You need to install it in the cooler line itself. There is a quality unit out there where the probe actually goes in the flow. Reads instant temp changes as you drive, way better than in the pan or trans test plug hole. You want to read how hot the trans is getting, not how hot the case is. Need instant results, not "Whoops, what have I just done?" I am sure there is are better ones out there, so here's one for starters.

You can use either, however, most egt probes are 1/8NPT. For the boost, if your gauge came with a hose kit, most likely, it is 1/8 also. If you are making your own boost assembly, you could use either, but a 1/4NPT is a rather large hole. Best bet is to buy the 1/8NPT tap and 11/32 drill bit. $8 total at SEARS. Good luck, it's very easy. PM or ask in thread if you have any more Q's.
