40K, no issues. I have been using the Rotella oil since new and have been contemplating going to synthetic. I know that there has been quite a bit posted, but I change it every 5K and the truck runs great. Thanks in advance. Jet Wrench.

You can switch anytime. I would suggest doing an analysis every 5k.

Rotella is very good oil and i think you should stay with it. I dont like to change brands of oil in a motor after they are broke in. We run rotella in are 05 pete with 200 000 miles on it with an oil change every 10 000. And no problems with it.

Rotella 15 40 here, I thought about doing the synthetic thing but I change it about every 5k anyway so to me there was no sense in the added expense.

I just changed from synthetic to Rotella 15w 40. I've been hearing that dyno oil can be better under certain conditions.

The problem with oil is there is rarely any cut and dry answer because none of us tear our engines down with any kind of regularity. The best bet is to have regular oil analysis done at a reputable place. I have mine done at my Caterpillar dealership.

When I ask the techs at the analysis place about oil the only thing I can get out of them is to go with name brand oils...Other than Pennzoil. They say Pennzoil leaves a gray film in the engine but other than that none of them recommend any specific oil.

To an extent I buy into that theory but I will admit some oils do better in certain engines. I was doing maintenance on a Cat 3406 in a Pete and the damn thing ran better on Rotella T than Dello. I wouldn't have believed it without seeing it. The biggest change was it stopped burning oil but it also seemed to run better.

I run amsoil 5W40 in the Duramax, have around 55k on it. My 97 5.7 I just sold had 243K
I ran 0w30 in it. I change oil every 7500 miles. The advantage of synthetic is that it is easier on valve and crank seals, mineral based oil will harden rubber seals over time causing them to weap or outright leak. Synthetic keeps the seals soft, my 97 could sit for a month (which it did the last few months I owned it) and when I would start it there was not a wisp of smoke out the exhaust, that impressed the gentleman that bought it. Have a good day.

I run rotella 5-40 synthetic in my o6 cummins and I also run it in my pete with a putty tat with the fs2500 filter. I do oil samples every 20k, the truck currently has 675,000 and still shows samples like the day it was new. Will be switching my D-Max over as soon as my filters and deep trans. pan get delivered from merchant next week.

I switched from Rotella 15-40 to Rotella Syn last oil change and didnt pick up any fuel mileage or notice any other performance change, so since its driven only around 5,000 miles per year think I will go back to 15w40 next oil change. It's about 1/2 the price.

What kind of change intervals are you getting on the PETE ?

If you aren't going to do longer drain intervals, don't bother. It doesn't give better protection and whoever said what they said about the seals is telling an old wives tale. Stick with what you have already been using. The only thing you might want to think about is going 10k instead of 5k on the changes. The Dmax is very easy on oil and the Rotella Dino will more than hold up. You'll get more for your money and the same protection. Just use a good filter such as Wix or Napa or Amsoil. Stay away from Fram if you can.
