Took the rig to the scale this past week with the 40' toy hauler loaded with water, toys, fuel and food.

31,080 total weight

I was expecting about 28k or so.

So tonight I took the truck to the scale.

6420 front
5660 rear
________
12,080 lbs.

With the fuel full it will be 12,495

So, going up the steep grades loaded...42mph is not too bad for no mods

Techprof1: I read your post regarding the curb weight and I would be concerned about being 5080 lbs over your 26,000 GCVW. I have been thru many many D.O.T. check points and with that amount of over weight you are in the $3,000.00 Fine range plus any other violations they start on. I would definetly be looking for ways to shed lbs. There is no tolerance once your over your manufactures rating , regardless how many tricks others tell you to play when registering your unit. Those who believe that are only fouling their selfs, or talking out their other end! Good Luck!!!

Thanks.....I agree, too heavy...but probably every 40' toy hauler rig out there, especially if it is a 3500 is over their gvcw.

I believe that you can remove the factory GCW/GVW tag after the upfitters tag has been placed on the door jamb. I don't think the state patrol/dot is going to know the GCW of every truck on the road. As long as you are below axle ratings I don't believe they will have a problem.

The 4500/5500 are alot more truck than the Fords and they can go up to 33,000 GCW with lower rated axles. Then weak link in the GM is supposed to be the Allison, but I doubt that it really is.

12k+ tare weight is really high I guess, although you have a crew cab, full bed and lots more options than me. My 5500 reg cab 152" wheelbase work truck optioned with a steel flatbed tares at 10.295.

let your truck run between 2600 and 2800 rpm in overdrive and these hogs will pull anything over any hill. I've been from one end of this country to the other pulling all types of trailers with my 4500 dmax automatic crew cab chariot conversion with 478 gears stock. Haul ass, and let the good times roll! animal

Thanks animal and chtucker. It definately has the low end pull. A bit dissapointed with the pulling up the grades. I have got the 5:13 gear in the 4x4. I wish I had the higher gears.

Hey, off topic, I have searched high and low. Where is the plug for the block heater hidden?

Block heater plug in, on mine, is below the driver's door.. a little hatch, with the socket in there. It takes a hd round plugged extension lead..

I think 5.13 is the highest you can get in a 4x4... 5.38 is the only other option

Hey CHTucker, I read your reply and I was hoping that you can fill me in on the 5500. I ordered one late Feb. and believe it is to be built mid April. My unit has 152 wheelbase reg cab D/A combo, a/c and the power goodies. I have a custom service/utility body 54" high X 11' long ordered and the upfitters claim my truck would be 9925 lb with the body. I think I read yours was a steel flat bed and came in at 10225? Can't remember what I read. Anyhow, how is the performance and do you tow anythig. What axle ratio are you running? Any idea of mpg and what application are you using the truck for? Thank You

http://chtucker.home.bresnan.net/sidesnow.jpgMy truck is set up to plow. 5.13 gears are what I have. It winds up on the highway, but I don't travel very far with it. It has awesome traction in the snow and the high frame height keeps me front getting stuck in the deep stuff. I am having failure issues with the Boss plow however. My truck with the 1300 lbs flatbed tared at 10,295 lbs. The build sheet said the truck weighed about 8900lbs so the tare is right about on (150lbs for the plow mount?) I doubt that you are going to be under 10,000 with a service body unless it is fiberglass? I get about 9-12mpg, but I only have 4000 miles on the truck. I have towed 20,000lbs without an issue (moved a kawaski loader 20 miles) Overall I am really pleased.
