Is this a typical problem ?

Head gaskets failed on both sides and caused compression into the coolant system. (One injector sleeve was found to be bad also)

Mechanic said the head bolts stretched to cause the condition, which also resulted in the heads being slightly "wallered out" around the head bolts.

Mechanic recommended replacing the heads, but he said the heads don't look real bad and may be fine by just reinstalling all. Of course the dealership can not get any gead gaskets because they are on back order with a ship date of Dec. 29.

Truck has 122,000 miles.
Money is relevant though my son works at the dealer and helps the diesel mechanic with the work.

Would you order new heads and replace the old valves and springs ?
Install the old heads ?
Ship the heads off and have a complete valve job and machine work done ?. I see SoCal offers a complete head job on your heads if you ship them too him for $2000.

I'm in the process right now of replacing my head gaskets. Both sides were blown, the heads were ok just had them resurfaced. And yes you have to replace the headbolts. I'm using the ARP which are around $600. Way more than the stock ones.

Also the head bolts are "stretched" during the torque process. The problem I found is that the head gaskets are a bad design and thats why the new ones they offer are a different design.
