Like GMC-2002 says... Won't conduct underhood heat.

And perhaps because there is no paint to flake/chip off a plastic tube :)

I think the plastic will make more power. :D

Some site did some testng with metal vs plastic intake tubes, and the air velocities involved negated any worries about heat conduction. They are like all manufacturers from GM to Mercedes, they are going the cheap way...plastic.

I believe the AEM unit is a polished Aluim. pipe not steel, which by the way is better than steel. Steel rust! Rust down the intake and into the turbo and motor is not a good thing.

Better tell all the drag racers to quit iceing their intake manifolds and/or intercoolers before each run.

K&N came out with chrome intake tubes. Don't know if it is actually metal or just chromed plastic.

I got the plastic tube too. I've thought of wrapping it with silver heat tape. I did it on my old supercharged gasser. I think it helped insulate from the engine heat.

gittyup,

We have the last of the metal turbo Stage II's on the way to us as I type this. I expect them to hit today or tommorrow. This is alllllll there is going to be, end of story. We have a special price on them as they are an end of production clearance item. Call us if you would like one. We also have the NEW Stage II on special for those that would like the plastic intake tube.

"Wasn't" (past tense now) the AFE metal tube the main source of the more pronounced "turbo whistle" ? It would seem to me AFE just shot themselves in the foot?

I know the $350 whistle didn't impress me enough and I sold mine a year ago ...along with the metal-flaking tube. I think this is the main reason AFE has went to the plastic tube ...now they don't have too worry about any liability of paint coming off and being digested by the engine. I'm sure they will say plastic is better, blah blah blah ...when in reality it's the liability and cost savings. Just my 2 cents.

Did AFE pass the cost savings of the plastic tube down to the consumers?

It might not rust but it still dont fit very good. The metal ring and screw on the 6.6 thing is sitting to high and is making a whole in my insulation under the hood. the nipple for the turbo silancer should've been a little lower.IJMOFO

Did AFE pass the cost savings of the plastic tube down to the consumers?):h ):h ):h

From what I saw on the THREE different tubes I had they were getting the painted ones made up pretty cheap. Also the cleaning kits won't clean the new PG7 filter all the way. Either will any other cleaners so far.

I have the AFE Stage 2 with the plastic pipe and it does whistle however I can't compare it to the metal tube cause I've never heard or had one. Overall, I think it sounds good though...

I just put on a B&S intake on my truck. It came powder coated to any color I wanted for $221.00

Less pressure drop through plastic. Plastic pipe is the standard for air to water in a lot of industrial plants. Later! Frank

Afternoon,

Been out of touch with the site lately. Wanted to let you folks knwo that you have really hammered us on the metal tube AFE Pro Guard 7 Intake systems that we have. We cleared out the AFE warehouse onthem and still have 4 left for those that are interested. They are priced to go at way below the price for the standard 4 layer filter intake system price. Call us if you have any interest, we also have the LLY Pro Guard 7 intake systems on s special DieselPlace.com sales too!

I've been running an AFE PG7 on a K&N Plastic intake for over a year now. Guess I did it for the heat reason to begin with before I knew it didnt matter... I couldnt be happier though....Doesnt the whistle come with filter type just as much as the tube itself?
