I have a 2004.5 LLy Duramax with under 6000 miles that is using 1 qt of motor oil consistently every 1000 miles. I know this isnt normal the concern I have is that the dealer will void my warranty or flag my truck over the fact that I have been running the edge/attitude also unplugged my egr valve and removed the cat. Should I remove the edge and plug the egr back in before taking truck into dealer? I was told they can tell if you where running on a chip is this true? Any advice is appreciated. John A

You'd better put that cat back in too IMHO. Anything that doesn't look stock could start to raise questions. Make sure you scan and clear any codes that would be caused by your mods.
Do you think that you were too easy on it when new, and the rings didn't seat?
I have babied this thing and have never been above level 3 on the attitude, have changed the oil and filter 3 times in less than 6000 miles. Latter John A

Thought so, though there could be another reason... take a look at this:

Sorry to hear you're situation however. Keep us posted as to what the cause of consumption might be.
I hope I dont get any greif from the dealer. Thanks for the info very interesting and it makes sense. Latter John A

I glanced over the above article and I believe he is half right. I've been through numerous engine schools and no manufacture recommends engine break-in under full load.

Yeah, I don't know what to think myself, but he does have some interesting points, especially bearing clearances. Since reading this I kinda chuckle when someone post that "it'll get better milage/power when its loosened up." There had better not be anything binding or it won't last long anyway. The only thing that can get better is compression, and if what this guy claims is true then your window for that to occur is short.
I came across this thread AFTER I had put 500+ miles on my LLY, although I did hook it up at that point and ran it hard with the trailer in tow.
I don't want this thread to get off on a tangent, but I'm real curious now as to see what the root cause is for JCA's oil issue. Guess it also could be a bad turbo bearing seal, broken oil ring, emm can't imagine valve guides...

JCA did not mention if he is seeing blue smoke from his exhaust, which would normally indicates a mechanical problem. He may have a crankcase ventilation problem also. If the crankcase pressure is to high the oil has to go somewhere.

True. How are these Dmax's vented? My Cummins just had a vent pipe, that dumped right on the steering box!

Can someone please tell me what IMHO means? I'm still learning to read these forum codes. THANKS

IMHO- In My Honest ( or Humble ) Opinion.
I notice alot of blue smoke when I first accelerate down the street and the haze just lingers and smells like an oil burner then I dont realy notice it again untill the first drive of the day. It seems to quit smoking after its warmed up. Thanks John A
