Will be driving from eastern Illinois to Kansas City, Mo to pick up my new truck on Monday. 2007 Chevy 2500HD LTZ, ext.,Long Bed, Duramax. Hope to fill it with a truck camper in the spring. I know NOTHING about diesels, other than in the 60's we could never get my dads to start in the winters of Wisconsin. Looking for guidance.

Greetings and thanks for the encouragement.
Question...I just paid some serious money for a truck with a Duramax Diesel and a pretty fair transmission. Keep in mind that I have never owned a diesel.
When I look through this site it seems that everyone is "tricking out" their engines and trucks. Huge tires, beefed-up suspensions, new air intakes, chips, change the oil every 3000 miles, gas additives, engine blankets, etc, etc.
What happens if I just drive the truck, change the oil when they tell me to and simply enjoy the strength of the stock setup? What do I have to do to enjoy a long-running motor and transmission?
Thanks again,
Mike
PS What brand of engine oil is preferred?

Don't do anything if you don't want to - chances are you'll have less problems (dpf excluded - time will tell). Just enjoy it.
I prefer Amsoil products, but you will get all sorts of answers on this question and some are very adamant about their choice. Plenty of posts in the fluids section you could read and make your own decisions on that.
Also - I prefer 5k mile intervals on oil. Trans and fuel filter every oil change. Again everyone is different. Lube the front end more frequently however.
I would however change the oil, all filters and the differential fluids within the first 1500 miles. Get the breakin oil out of there and many have complained that there isn't enough fluid in the diff from the factory. Regardless, I change it to help remove the shavings from breakin.
Good luck and enjoy!
