What temperatures are some of you guys in the midwest getting when it's 25 or 30 degress out? I've been around 165 during driving, but sometimes when I leave it idle the high idle will kick in (after it's been running nonstop for a few hours).

I can't remember what I was getting in the summer, but I think my 6.0L always ran right around 210 - year round...

put on your winter front cover, that will help. On my way in to work this am (12 degrees F) I got 170 ish, but it is only a five minute drive or so on the freeway.

I am running the winter front -grille only, today it was around 9 outside and I only saw 210 after a long acceleration. Then when off the pedal it goes back down to ~180 fairly quickly. The trans is pretty damn low too.

Might be time to put the bumper cover on.

I put on the grill cover last night, today it was 4 on my way in. I saw 210 on highway. Truck is kept in garage 100% of nights.

I don't think I will put on the bumper cover.

So my crazy mind remembered the wrong numbers. I'm getting around 185, which is much better in my book. Can't use the grille covers so much because of my snow plow. But I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought. Thanks for the replies!

It was -5f this morning and my truck ran around 195 with winter cover on. Cold ride home from work

It was about 5-7 degrees here today and I saw 185 (while driving) without a winter front.

No front grill cover, equall's gelled fuel from the cold air hitting the fuel filter.

Im running my cover, however I dont see too many diesels with them on. Even when it was 4deg out with -20 windchills.

Since I have my winter front I figure I may as well use it. I'm sure the truck is happier as well....

Guys if you have the cover use it. A diesel runs on heat and far more efficiently with more heat.

I only get down to the 20's and some times the teens but at those temps I will rarely see 180 and the tran won't make 150. Put the cover on and sometimes I'll get near the 210 mark but run over 180.

I see few guys use them but heck that is there problem.

I can get the tranny to 120 or so in 10 min and hold it there with the truck on elevated idle, never needed a cover to keep norm operating temps.

Wow, I must have a really good cooling system. Whats temps are you seeing outside?

Well I do drive it really easy, that could be a factor as well.

Man, mine must be really cold blooded, if i don't use the grill cover mine will never get to operating temp even at 30*. I start running the cover when day time highs are in the 40's. I'm sure it helps with fuel milage. All this is running empty.

Well its 17 here today with heavy winds and If I let it idle from cold, let the high idle kick in in 10 min or so the tranny will be 120~(on the edge) The stock gauge doesent really move till around 105 or so compared to the edge, I tow heavy in the mountains all summer without any issues on the hot side, and it seems to warm up pretty quickly in the lower teens(unplugged) I have been in 4wd for a week or so, which gets the tranny warm a little quicker as well as the running temp being warmer.

Where is a good place to shop for a cover? This is my first diesel and it is cold blooded. I drive 30m mins in the morning and its 20 mins before it gets warmed up. Trans is very low also.

I use the winter cover and also fashioned plugs for the slots in the front bumper from foam pipe insulation. Going 65-70 on the Interstate in -3º air temps the coolant temp varied from 180-200º.

Good point...I believe the cover plays a part to keep cold out of the engine compartment and helps keep underhood temps up, reducing the chance for gelling while driving distances in extreme cold. The only time I gelled was in -15F w/o a cover, I've driven those temps before and after with the cover but w/o a gell.

I see about 165~168 on mine without the front cover. Temps are about 15~20*F right now.

If there is going to be a winter where I gell up it would be this winter. Has not reached above 5 degrees in two weeks now. night temps are -10 to -25. No problems at all. I only have the grill cover on, but I do run power service most of the winter. Trans is always pretty cold, and 180 coolant is common.

I haven't been real excited to run my winter cover this year. It looks like it's wearing the chrome off of my grille. Has anyone else had this problem? It looks like just the bottom edge.

This morning we had about 7 deg., engine ran around 185-190ish, tranny never raised off of the peg. This was w/o the cover on.

Mine also wears off the chrome on the grill.

I am thinking about geting one to see if it helps my fuel milage. It has been cold in delaware. 14 on the way to work and I cant get anywhere near 180.

Make sure everyone checks their trans lines when it gets cold out!
