Just wondering, does your alls turbo whine (sound of a bad power steering pump) when the truck is cold (under 150 degrees)?

No, it's in the mornings when the truck is cold and I accelerate the turbo sounds like a bad steering pump whine or like a turbo that has been run hot. Once the engine temp gets up it sounds fine and has the normal turbo whistle. Is it just the cold turbo or is it going out?

I've wondered the same thing because it does it on mine as well.....i seem to have no power loss or anything wrong so i guess its not all too bad

I hoping it's nothing to serious either. I would be extremely po'ed if the turbo were to go out of this pretty much stock truck with 65k on it. This thing would go on the market faster than you could blink if that were the case.

It's the Allison, she wines when she's cold. Happens every winter

My original turbo didn't make any noise but my second stocker I put on did the same thing. Only when its really cold. Not too loud but its more noticable. About every 4th LB7 we get in to our work does that.

Are you sure it's not the fan locking up when cold. Mine does that and it'll make a hell of a loud fan sound when first speeding up then it quits.

I'm sure its not the fan

My truck does this also, but like said before only until it warms up. My friends does it also, so i did'nt think to much about it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You really don't hear a lot about stock turbo's blowing without some idiot messing with it (first hand experience :D)

FWIW, Mine does it to. Took it the dealer and they said it's normal... Doubt it though, because the "cold low pitch whine" just started at 28k miles. I'm supposed to test drive it with a tech. Just need to drop it off night before to get the sound on a nice cold morning with the tech riding shotgun. After 10 minutes of driving it less noticeable, but I can still hear it when spooling up and hard under acceleration warm.

Yours is a LLY and that turbos a whole different animal than the turbo on a LB7.

My turbo does the same thing. Whines when cold and I really notice it in the fall when it goes from warm to cold....40 degrees and lower I can really hear the whine..

Goes away about 5 minutes into my drive to work

I've notived that on very cold days I too can hear my turbo before its all good and warm. I'm certain its the turbo. The whistle is louder and deeper. But it goes away after a mile or two. And its only when its below 30.

Mine had whistle when it was really cold and seemed short of power. The dealer pressurized the intercooler and found one of the welds on the end was cracked or had not been done right. It seemed like when the intercooler and air was cold it would leak more than when the cooler got warmed up with heat from the rad. Factory spec for the intercooler is to pressurize it to 30 psi. and it should drop less than 5 psi in 15 sec. Hope this helps,

Have you guys thought about the oil pump? Good chance that it is not the turbo you're hearing at all. That an LLY guy is hearing something smiler supports this. Fact is that the engine oil pump is really noisy when that oil is thick...watch your oil pressure gauge and see if there is a correlation between when the noise leaves and when the oil pressure stabilizes to its normal operating range. I bet that this is what you've got going on.
