: Deavers gettin rusty
varty yo 12-14-2008, 01:05 PM I noticed the other day my deavers are gettin really rusty. they have only been on the truck since may, but they look like hell. my stock springs didnt even look that bad after 2 winters. anyone else having this problem? i would have expected a little better quality for what they are worth.
Joey D 12-14-2008, 06:08 PM Jack it up so the axle is hanging and hit them with some flat black. Not much else you can do.
dodgedsl03 12-14-2008, 06:10 PM Deaver is a california company probly didn't plan on the salt and calcium cloride people subject them to. Or a poor quality paint job. Its always sunny in cali right ?
varty yo 12-14-2008, 06:18 PM yah ill be repainting them in the spring. but geez its only really been winter here for a month and they already look like ass

Mine have been on for about 2 1/2 years now, they are not Deavers, and I paint them every spring and they still look like I recovered them from the titanic.:(
BIG MACZ 12-14-2008, 08:51 PM Same here, I hit mine with Mercruiser outdrive Black, seems to last longer than regular paint, and It has a nice sheen to it, not too glossy. I paint them twice a year.
down4bmx 12-15-2008, 12:54 AM mine have been on since May and havent gotten any rust yet coming up on them.. I bet soon there will be..... Im in cali, and no its not always sunny, but close! ;) hahahah just kidding we get our bad share of wheather
gasuout 12-15-2008, 01:56 AM Rust has nothing to do with the quality of the springs though . All springs rust I see . My factory springs in back are hammered .
How they ride is what counts . Deavers are #1 there .
I have a set of Deavers up front on mine .
They get rusty when exposed to the elements here in Cali also .
Most seems to come from between the springs where they rub to raw steel .
Ive painted mine 3 times in 2 years .
Seems normal to me .
I just hit them with some paint till the next time they need it .
varty yo 12-15-2008, 11:23 AM im not sayin they are bad springs i love them they ride so nice.
Nor-Cal Nick 12-15-2008, 03:40 PM Hey Brett, yea you should hit them with some black and touch up your bad spots. Some area's of course are worse than others on how the springs will hold up:(. I have never really came across any other nice riding after market spring that holds up any better on coding than what we see on the Deavers....Sorry. We use any high grade satin black around here if we paint them.
zach45 12-15-2008, 05:40 PM could you use maybe por15?
varty yo 12-15-2008, 05:42 PM thats a choice for sure. i used a ton of it on my landcruiser frame. just alot of prep thats the shitty thing
Nor-Cal Nick 12-15-2008, 06:01 PM We need to try that stuff. A guy we shipped a kit to used that on his install. Here is his build: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148810
varty yo 12-15-2008, 09:08 PM its the goods nick!!! you guys in cali have it so good. your frames never look bad. mine looks disguting with all the salt and crap
down4bmx 12-15-2008, 10:03 PM could you use maybe por15?
Por 15 is a great product. I used to it when I restored my 58 VW Beetle Pan. It works very well if you prep the surface right it lasts a really long time and pretty strong!
cjsho 12-15-2008, 10:07 PM I wasted a few hours taking my springs apart before installing them. They still have rust between the leaves...... I'm sure it's worse up north!!!

Every truck I've seen in person with Deavers has rusty springs which really turned me off... especially when paying that kind of money for them. I called Deaver and they can powder coat them, but it adds another ~$250 to the price. :( I prefer the stock springs as they don't sag when loaded like the Deavers and don't look like crap.

Your missing the point of Deavers....a better ride...thats why they sag under heavy load but ride nicer empty. Nothing airbags won't fix while towing or hauling stuff....and Por-15 is all you need to stop the rust...Problem solved.
down4bmx 12-16-2008, 12:16 AM Id never own another set of springs except deavers they ride awesome... Any leaf spring will rust eventually since they do come in contact with each other...
Joey D 12-16-2008, 08:50 AM My atlas springs did the same thing. Not much you can do except spray some paint on them.
2006GMCDuramax 12-16-2008, 09:44 AM I'm not sure why Powder Coat has only been mentioned once, but that is way better than paint if you have anyone around that does it.
zach45 12-16-2008, 11:15 AM that por15 looks like some serious... i would defantly go that way..
powdercoat would rub off the the springs meet no?
Nor-Cal Nick 12-16-2008, 12:00 PM You guys do know that Deavers don't "sag"....They are progressive and that is in design of how they work. You can't have a soft riding spring with out the progressive spring rate to it. Your factory springs to the same thing just not as much progressive rating in them so you don't see it as much but the feel between the 2 springs are a big difference.
Here is also something more to add. We have painted and powder coated tons of leaf springs, on a taller spring they have more arch to them and when you paint them you only coat the out side. As the spring works the leafs rub against each other and alot of the crud rust comes from between the springs. Yes Deavers have isolates but still you get rubbing. Even spring packs that we powder coat if driven each day will start to see the rust coming from the springs rubbing. Really if your spring doesn't have rust coming from between I would start to wounder are they even really moving?
I will say it sucks to see a rusty spring, and yes we sometimes have to take extra special care of that and re paint or coat the spring pack but it is in design on the spring that will still end up rubbing and you will see rust at some point. On flatter OEM springs you will not see this that much due to the flat design of the spring has less rubbing against each other so they will not see rust coming from between.

Does powder coat flex though?
confrontational 12-16-2008, 02:38 PM Paint will only be a temp fix. Get some Klean Strip rust converter and wipe them down. They will be nearly black when finished, and it's actually a chemical reaction that forms a polymer type coating, they won't ever rust again. We use this on cast iron stuff all the time to seal them from rusting.
Nor-Cal Nick 12-16-2008, 04:14 PM Does powder coat flex though?
Yes, powder will flex. As long as it's a good prep & powder job you will be good for what these trucks see.
