: Hypothetical cat question

Does anyone know the material the cat is made of? I’ve heard some kind of ceramic, but don’t know if that is right or not. I wonder what would happen if perhaps a person was to bore a nice 3 ˝ inch tunnel right through the middle of the cat. It looks like there would be about 2 inches of material surrounding the tunnel. I wonder if that would be self supporting, or would it be likely to collapse, thus plugging the cat housing? If the kitty is some kind of ceramic, it would make sence that it would be plenty strong enought to withstand vibrations and exhaust rushing through it. Also with the tunnel method, there should'nt be any kinda weird turbulence going on as there would be with a totally gutted cat. With the surrounding material left intact, it would still sound “full”. All this is hypothetical of course.

I would hypothetically take a long bar and insert it into the cat and use a hammer to push it through, keep at it till its all out.

Unfortuneatly the way that front pipe is made you would have to cut this hypothetical cat loose and make this mod and reweld it to the front pipe.
I wasnt that patient and my kitty fell on a large prybar a couple of hundred times untill it was gutless.

What would be your purpose if 'hole-ing' out the cat?

Your not going to gain much (if any) performance for all the work it takes.

Is yours totally guttless, if so, do you think it's causing any weird turbulence in the totally empty cat itself? I just wanted to see if I could make the exhaust path a little less disruptive. What I don't want is the surrounding material to come caving down and plugging the exhaust system. Hypothetically of course :)

From what I understand, it makes the turbo all that much more audible :ro)

I think I'll try it both ways and see which one I like better.

Take the engine bay insulation pad off the underside of the hood and you'll make the turbo more audible, along with your air intake and a few other things.:)

Been there, done that, hypothetically. And yes, it does cave in, hypothetically. Get it all out, hypothetically speaking!

Who needs a cat?!?!?!? None on mine.

Thanks, that's what I was wanting to hear, if it would colapse or not.

The monolith (as they are called) is made of a proprietary ceramic. They're very tough. I doubt you could drill a hole without cracking it through to the outer diamater. If you could drill through, then it should not collapse.

There are microscopic particles of platinum, palladium, and ruthenium stuck to the ceramic. They do the catalyzing.

2 CO + O2 --> 2 CO2
4 HC + 5 O2 --> 2 H2O + 4 CO2

Most people say that the cat is not a big restriction, but it does damp the turbo sounds.

Plus, if you drill it, you'll never be able to put it back on to pass an emisions test. A swapable downpipe seems like a better idea.

Now, we're getting to the meat of it!! Sounds like it not worth the risk of leaving the surrounding material and having a big chunk of it fall and block the exhaust flow. Of course, hypethetically speaking, this person would happen to have an extra intact cat laying around.

Added on edit..........I just became a diesel fanatic!! :ro)
