I currently have a 06 LLY 4x4 with about 65k miles. For the most part, love the truck. It's in the shop now. The dealer is saying I need a front hub (which i will probably do myself) AND $4,500 with of rear end work. I don't have the complete list as i am still picking myself up off the ground. Long story short, the axle tubs are leaking and I believe they want to replace u-joints. I am dealing with the dealer now about whether my extended warranty will cover. There seems to be some confusion on the warranty i bought(but that is another story).

Given that 08 are such a deep discount, i wonder if it would be worth the upgrade.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

$4500 sounds steep for the rear end but if you can do the hub I would think you could rebuild the rear end also for alot less than $4500. As far as trading for an 08 I don't know. I have an 08 and love it but this is my 1st diesel. The new body style, to me, is by far the best looking truck out now.

I would say this, do what you want, but here is some things I think you need to look at.

If you trade, 06 LLYs and LBZs are in high demand as the old schoolers want these as they are the last that are going to be easily modified for the emissions stuff, so make sure you get top dollar trade, if you do not, go to another dealer. that also makes it a reason to keep the truck and do the work yourself if the warranty does not cover it. You can get rear ends and such at salvage yards and you would be golden for who knows how long that way and much cheaper.

The new trucks are really nice too, so if you like the new ones and you can get what your old one is worth, then go for it. I will not get rid of my 06 for as long as I can keep my fingers on the wheel, but I do like the new ones too and I can not wait until they release the 4.5L sometime in the next 5 years.

Just cover the bases and make sure YOU are happy with YOUR decision.

good luck

I have an '08 and I like with exceptions of the emisssions equipment. Hopefully no one will hijack the thread about the DPF, but if you want/plan to run bio-disel, then the '08 wouldn't be for you because gm only recommends B5.

$4500 is alot cheaper than paying for the new vehicle. If you spend your money on quality replacement parts, you may postpone the same repairs later down the road. Unless your truck is chronically falling apart and you do not want anything that is in the '08, then keep what you got.

You could easily pick up a low milage rear end from a salvage yard for alot less than $4500, does the gm powertrain warranty not cover the entire powertrain? Dont let the stealership bend you over for $4500 for a rear axle. Thats ridiculous.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I actually really like my 06 and have no complaints. Even though the 08 has some nice features, I think i am going to work to keep mine. I have been reading more and more on the DPF stuff and it sounds like a headache.

As far as the warranty was concerned, the 06 does not have a 100k powertrain (accordingly to dealer) warranty. I did buy an extended, and after a week and a half, it appears that the warranty issue may be solved and it's all going to get fixed. Waiting on last minute "approval" from warranty company.

Thanks again.

Great to hear you made a sound decision and hopefully your warranty will pay. I love my 06 too, although I have the LBZ not the LLY. Great truck and with the preventative maintainence I have done, at 100,000 it is still driving like it was new and runs flat out awesome.:D
