What do you think of getting a new rear axle for the upgrade?
Has any one done this?
What will fit in my Suburban?
I can move (or change) the mounts if that is all it takes to make one fit.

Here is a link for the disc brakes with parking brake!

http://www.tsmmfg.com/2830.htm

I have more! Let me dig thru them and I will post.

I can't help with the axle part, I know nothing about them.

I do like the idea of rear disc!

This link is for a suburban only, here is Another;

I have a rear axle out of an 04 truck that I am putting in my 98. I went this route because I want a good parking break and don't care for the older eldorado calipers. I will also get a better rear break setup that will last.

Does any one know what years of rear end will have the disk brakes?

Mine 99 gasser has discs in the rear, but it's a half ton silverado. don't know of 3/4 ton or 1 ton's. the E-brake on the disc rear ends sux. very thin and brake often. the E-brake is actually inside the drum of the disc.

hmm.....on most rear disk trucks as in my 03.....the rear disks suck. The inside pad doest wear on the rotors correctly and actually ruins the rotor and pad. You cant have someone turn the rotors as it builds up rust and no one will touch them cause it will ruin their cutter.

Also check out the parking brake shoes as they are over $100

Just went through all this on my 03. I went to 2 different shops cause i didnt believe the first guy that he coudlnt turn the rotors. The 2nd guy was a gm certified mech and stated this happnes on almost all of the 3/4 ton trucks.

Does any one els have an opinion on newer rear disk brake setups? Maybe I should go to a locking FF 14 bolt from my SF 14 Bolt and then get an after market kit.

You could put disc brakes on the rear and put the parking brake on the drive shaft. Just look at the first link I gave you above.

I'm sure they can have issues but not all of them do, it's common for them to last 75k and more. I have the same setup on my 06 van and it just hit 75,000 miles today and the brakes are still in good shape. Parking brake works good still.

My truck is Auto and I live in a flat area o the country so I never use the Parking break. But if I ever want to sell it a Working Parking break is part of the safety so it needs to be there.
The Kit for my SF rear end is $730 with Ebrake setup. locking rear end will go from 400 to 900 a new rear axle from a wrecker near by is $850 with the breaks, and a Limited slip FF rear end.
