:( I NEED HELP!!!!!
Heres the problem.... A 6.2 diesel engine that runs good WHILE ON LEVEL GROUND? LMAO  down a hill? IT SMOKED BADLY it acted like it would stall,
2 years ago i replaced my 6.2 engine in my truck cause the rings went bad..
so i opted for a replacement. 2 years went by NO PROBLEMS, THEN The clutch went bad in truck. So i parked it till i got the money to repair it. WELL The truck sat for about 6 mths to a year, NOW :o: Every other week i would start it and turned the truck around etc, KEEPING IT PLUGGED IN too, WELL I just recently had it fixed, :D with NEW clutch kit, new Master for the clutch and the slave cyl replaced. On the way to the garage it did/does run fine except when i was going down a hill it made a clicking sorta sound like the clucth just gave out, and it acted like it was going to stall and it smoked real bad. When i got to the bottom of the hill on flat land it stopped smoking and ran fine the rest of the way, Now i go pick it up after just dropping 800 bucks :( into the clutch etc and it ran fine etc, AGAIN on the way home? i went down another hill and the smoke HAPPENED AGAIN only worse, people called the fire department thinking my truck was on fire? :D LMAO :D anywho. again once i was on flat land, it stopped smoking and ran good all around the neiborhood, WITH NO SMOKE, While sitting in the driveway it starts and runs like nothing is wrong  HUM! I am new to diesels and have NO CLUE WHAT THE Fu@k? the problem is, someone said change my oil and filter? some said injection pump? some said it could be the rings need to reseat? from not running but i have been starting it so i dont think that would be the issue, someone said its the diesel fuel in it still, but if the fuel was bad it would smoke even on a flat surface if i am correct, it probly can use some new glow plugs, i know some diesel engines smoke apon start up, but i have NEVER NEVER SEEN THIS... I TO would have thought it was on fire. WHAT CAN BE WRONG? can anyone give me some type of direction to go, parts are exspensive for this engine, which i love the 6.2 and have thought of swapping it out for a 350 small block ONLY BECAUSE OF THE PRICE OF PARTS, which i have been told that the 350 will bolt up to the manual trans i have. TRUCK INFO IS: 1990 GMC 3500 series 1 ton truck. the new engine in it is probly a late 1980's model. HELP :(:(:eek::( I AM VERY CONFUSED. THE LOCAL GARAGE SAID 80 bucks an hr just to figue it out? I dont have that kinda cash, and then to fix what ever the problem is? ANYONE SOMEONE? CLUES THANKS FOR THE HELP

What color is the smoke while on the downhill?
White, blue, or black...?
White would be water, blue would be oil, black would be diesel

You should check that your air intake is unrestricted, new air filter, etc.

Fuel filter replacement might be a good idea. Perhaps water in fuel or tank
only get sucked in on a downhill?

I don't understand what you mean by 'clicking' from the clutch.
Could it be a solenoid clicking? (glow plugs, cold advance on the IP)

My local garage is $80/hour also and it's worth it every time for those
jobs I really don't want to do or know how.

I would go with the water in the fuel tank. I'm a bit ADD but if I read your post right, you replaced the engine so that points to something other than the engine.

If you had water coming in the IP and injectors things would seize up in a hell of a hurry.

i suspect bad nozzles on the injectors or IP issues, dumping more fuel in the cylinders then needed when the engine is trying to hold truck back going downhill with foot off the trottle. that unburned fuel gets in the hot exaust and is going to produce smoke, when the engine starts firing again on the flat stretch it will burn it out again.

just an idea,I may or may not be wrong or right
