Yes, you can change to the solid flywheel. Most of us do because the cost of the solid flywheel and new clutch is less than a replacement dual mass clutch. As to which is better? There are believers in both. I'm guessing that the clutch has been replaced as 273000 miles is not usual for these clutches.

never been replaced it came from the factory with it......the only thing done was a throw out bearing i did research and found out that you have to add a damper between the tranny and the transfer case which is alot of money so im goin to stick with the dual mass for around 800 dollars......flywheel and all maybe ill get another 237000 miles out of it

Chunk that dual mass - you can get a LUK kit w/ solid flywheel, clutch, TO bearing and pressure plate for around $450.00 on fleabay. No additional parts needed.

New Dual mass flywheel is around $800.00 by itself. If yours needs resurfacing or the springs are weak (you'll know by the clicking/popping when you let off the pedal after shifting gears) you'll need to replace it too.

i want a solid type but what every part place and the chevrolet place says you need to add a balancer or damper or somethin between the tranny and the transfer case.....which is exspensive

I've never heard of such a thing. The shop didn't put one on mine when they replaced the clutch......at least they didn't say anything about one nor did they charge me for anything like that.

hmmmmm

I have never heard of such a "damper" either. Who told you this? a dealer or someone trying to sell you more parts?

i think it was the dealer that told my dad that

lost with out spark plugs

For the 2wd truck we used to switch to a solid fly wheel the dealer wantedto sell us a new yoak for the back of the trans. They said it was a must. But that yoak has no affect on the clutch. The old school style is a better clutch. And the flywheel would live through 10 more clutches.
If you have a boat put a chain on that dual mass and sinkit.

well we choose to stick with the dual mass since we had good luck out of the last one......600 for a new flywheel and 200 for the clutch kit.....i sure hope it lasts

I'd buy a new solid flywheel, as I've seen them on Ebay for $130-150 and then buy a SouthBend clutch and never look back. I know SouthBend sells a 6.5 diesel clutch setup, but I don't know how much it runs for. Either way I'm sure it's worth it and you're probably looking at it lasting a very long time. Ford Powerstrokes also ran a dual mass flywheel setup and I've not heard good things in general from them. A lot of guys with them convert over to a solid flywheel and regular clutch. Looks like Dodge/Cummins was the only manufacturer not to offer a dual mass setup.
