Okay, quick question: I know the Finger Stick will solve the code issue, but I just don't have the time to install it right now. If I simply disconnect the EGR without a plate and I remove the kitty, will the only problem be codes? I can easily reset them with the Predator. Will the codes affect the way the truck runs, or will it be the same as if the Finger Stick was installed?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/badidea.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/help.gif

CEL may or may not come on. All the federal trucks (non-cali) we have done did not throw the light on. The codes are still there though (P0401, P0404). No loss of power.

Yes this is all true, but if you go to the dealer for any warranty work, you need to plug it back in and the codes will still be there. Then they will look into it and find that you removed your cat. Remember to put your cat back before you go back to the dealer.

Put the cat back on????????????????????????????????????????????????

Dude, you dont 15 minutes to install a stick? My dealer loves me, every time I go in I get the question, "how do you not get codes without a cat or a muffler" I always tell the, hey I bring it to yall becuase you know how to work on the truck; Im just the driver.

HeHe, I love these trucks.

Is the cat with a straight pipe in place of the muffler that much of a restriction that one would go through all the trouble of putting the thing back on to take it in for service? What about if it breaks down on the side of the road and you need to have it towed in?? I'm all about power and mods, but taking the cat off seems like too much of a PITA to deal with....maybe I'm getting old???

Has anyone seen less power with the cat out? I have seen this, but it does not make sense to me. It almost seems like the turbo can’t figure out what to do at first then it runs like it should. :wtf:

The LLY's turbo management appears to be adaptive. That is, it learns what vane position it should use to get what boost in what conditions. Added to that, it tries to create backpressure for the EGR whenever it can.

When you remove the Cat, you change the VVT mapping a lot and it will take the ECM a while to adapt.

Now, if you are throwing EGR codes, the ECM manages the VVT differently too. I don't know if it is good or bad though. One thing I have noticed is that with codes, the VVT does not shut the vanes all the way. The difference between full shut and slightly cracked does not produce any more boost that I can tell, however it does increase backpressure significantly. Go figure.

Thanks Fingers. So what you are saying is that the VVT turbo will take some time to readapt once the cat runs away. That explains why some here are and are not having problems.

There are limits to the ability to adapt. For instance, you can't close more than all the way closed on the vanes. But you get the idea. The EGR codes however, have little to do with adapting. The ECM commands full closed on the vanes, EGR valve full open, and looks for a minimum drop in the MAF readings. (~50 mV). If it doesn't get it, it will set the P0401 and P0404 codes. Some trucks still have enough reduction without the Cat to satisfy the ECM
