: 00's in the garage - Driving the ole 95 again.
CanadianRigger 03-26-2005, 03:19 PM Man this 95 drives nice and smooth and its a little quieter for some reason.
2000 is sitting in my garage now, i figured out where my boost was going or more like wasn't going. My homemade WG control had backed off all by itself :banghead: , i guess thats what happens when you don't have time to look at stuff, DOH!
First thing i think i'm going to look at is 6 & 8 glow plugs to make sure they haven't backed out of there holes causing the woofing, second will probably have a listen inside each intake runner for the woofing with the plenim off and then maybe the compression test (i have to buy a tester). One of these should tell me what cylinder is the culprit, once i have that all figured out then it will be decision time, pull it down myself? or send it out and save the headaches.
Hell maybe if i'm lucky its fuel related and won't have to pull it apart to much.
Who's with me if i attempt to do it myself?
I also picked up a new 5.1 MP camera for the show and tell stuff, lol.
Texas Diesel Guy 03-26-2005, 08:18 PM I'll do what I can to help from here ;) Hope its nothing serious.
Texas Diesel Guy 03-26-2005, 08:21 PM Hey, I stumbled on something you might be interested in.
Did you know, if you measure resistance across each glowplug with the engine running, you can compare the readings, the lowest resistance means the coolest, that might help you pick out the cold cyl. I think the only way to do it is to put leads on to the 4 on the pass side and just test them remotely if you know what I mean? kinda hard to touch the connector with a hot turbo in the way.
CanadianRigger 03-26-2005, 09:49 PM Not sure what you mean but its nice to have your support if i decide to rip it apart and do the job myself.
I'm sure the regulars and other knowledgeable ones like GMCTD, QM, TURBINE DOC, DIESEL PRO (or was that DIESEL-PRO... lol) will be happy to help me with this also but they're just being shy right now, right guys? RIGHT? RIGHT??
If after the initial testing i find its more than i want to do or have time to do then DSG might get to put their name on my truck to advertise one of the best performance builds they've ever done cause i won't let it leave their shop without pumping out some serious ponies, all with the electronic pump and maybe some propane assist.
TDG you will be #1 on my list for a performance rebuild of the pump if it goes to DSG.
I'm working away from home again but spring break is just around the corner, so i will start a new thread with the rebuild from start to finish if i take on this challenge by myself (and you guys of course), even if i send it to DSG you will get to see the results, either through pics and video here or when i visit a neighborhood near you on holidays sometime this summer. :ro)
bowtie 03-26-2005, 09:59 PM Hey Northern buddy I'll be there with you all the way, right behind you so to speak
Hey Rigger you work in oil fields right? and there're lots of those "grasshoppers", as my kids call them, down this way. You ever get this far south.
CanadianRigger 03-26-2005, 10:05 PM Cool, if i make it to OK on holidays can i take your ole cop car for a burn around the block too...lol ( i'll let you drive the acclaim)
bowtie 03-26-2005, 10:08 PM Oh now thats a even swap ain't it LOL
Texas Diesel Guy 03-26-2005, 10:22 PM Whats that? High Output DS Pump? Send her my way good buddy ;)
D.Camilleri 03-27-2005, 12:58 AM Count me in for any help you might need. I think I can still rebuild a 6.5 with my eyes closed, oh wait maybe that is because I can't see so good with out my reading glasses now:rolleyes:
:grd:
CanadianRigger 03-27-2005, 11:20 AM Thanks everyone, we'll see if i'm doing this once i find out what the problem is.
Bowtie,
Can't say i've been in your neck of the woods and yes i do work in the oilfields.
I have traveled pretty much every western state at one time or another, never been mid or east though yet.
Certain pump jacks are called grasshoppers as thats how the legs on them look, its just like a grasshopper, others are more conventional jacks, there's also screw pumps and electric submerisbles too. If you ever want to know anything about oil/gas i have a fair bit of knowledge on what goes on downhole and some surface knowledge as well.
Italian Stallion 03-27-2005, 11:32 AM CR....not to change the subject .....buuuuut. Since you have an "00" 6.5...Can I ask you please...Where the heck is the pmd on that motor...I have been under the hood, the chassis, the tail pipe looking for it and cannot find it. Does this F engine even have one? ( I feel so silly)When I look on the top of the manifold, I see nothing but a little tiny black box bolted to the top of the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intake.. but it is nowhere near the size of the pmd's I have seen in pictures..
CanadianRigger 03-27-2005, 12:16 PM Its on the side of the injection pump, i'll dig up a pic to show you and add it to this post in a minute.
This is my 95's PMD, the 00 is the same but may be hidden below the dual thermostats but you should be able to see it.
Italian Stallion 03-27-2005, 12:48 PM Thanks a bunch...I found it...yeah):h . Now I can see all the crap I have to take off before I can get to it...lol. Thanks very very much;) .
gmctd 03-27-2005, 09:05 PM Jist post pics when ur ready, CR - eyewitness descriptions are relatively subjective......
or is it subjectively relative?
CanadianRigger 03-27-2005, 11:02 PM Anyone looking for a 12 cyl diesel for their truck?
quantum mechanic 03-28-2005, 05:03 PM I like that glowplug idea, but it would be a lot simplier to probe the leads where they leave the wiring harness than add leads to probe.
I've also pulled the turboexhaust to listen to number 6 and 8 when I had my cracked piston.
Italian Stallion 03-29-2005, 08:30 AM QM...at the risk of sounding totally ignorant...(again). What is the unit that sits on the top of the intake manifold rite in the center of it..and why do I not have that on my intake.Mine is just flat with nothing on it.
quantum mechanic 03-29-2005, 10:26 AM Dead center on an S engine upper plenum is the EGR, F engines don't have them. The upper plenum also has the MAP sensor (a black rectangle, three wire connector) and the IAT sensor (2 wire connector).
quantum mechanic 03-29-2005, 10:29 AM Anyone looking for a 12 cyl diesel for their truck?
No, but I bet you could power a small town with it.
CanadianRigger 03-29-2005, 11:00 AM 2000 SLE you have the good one, HD, no EGR to screw up and only 1 selonoid to look after.
QM It pumped fluid @ 2.5 m3/min (2500 ltrs/min) @ 25,000 KPA (3,625 PSI) that contained 1500 kg's of sand per m3. And then there's also the liquid CO2 pumper that isn't pictured. We also use N2 pumpers.
