I left my truck in the airport parking garage for a week. When driving out of the airport my Edge Evo warned me EGTs went over 1250F. I haven't had EGT displayed for awhile so I don't know what they've been recently. The 1250F alert has always been set and it's the first time I've seen it without a trailer on. I'm running over 850F at idle and can't even creep up to 55mph on level ground while empty without topping 1250F. Any ideas?
I thought maybe probe went bad, but would it suddenly read high? We're in midst of first stretch of steady below-freezing weather here. I did notice that if I stomp on it I get no black smoke, just a puff of white, and EGT hits 1350F instantly. I usually get black smoke, and lots of it after babying it so long.
I have an appt at dealer tomorrow but have no idea how they can tell what the real EGTs are.

i would say bad probe. how does the truck run. perhaps you have a injector stuck open

Sounds like it might be a bad probe to me too, maybe a connection is really loose or touching something else

I'd like to know if there's something else that would cause such high EGTs. I'll try to take a look at the probe despite it being dark and freezing cold outside. However, I've never seen white smoke out the pipe at WOT before -- always been black before. It doesn't seem to be pulling as strong either but that could just be my aversion to driving with the Evo flashing the EGT alert at me.

I think it was the Evo. I reset it a couple of times without any luck. I left it unplugged all afternoon and it was back to normal after that. As for why I can't get black smoke, I guess it's just the snowy weather and the slippery roads. If I get a clear, dry day and a hill to climb I'm sure I'll get some smoke out of her.

we had SPA gauges on a dodge diesel. the egt would jump from 800 ish to over 1800 and back down and the fuel pressure would do the same along with boost but not all indications would spike at the same time. needless to say we never found the problem. SPA checked the gauges several times and we checked grounds ect but could not locate a problem. if it starts acting up again and you can plug in a laptop to monitor what is going on you should be able to zero in on the problem. i hear when a k type probe goes bad most of the time they just quit reading. hope this helps.

lack of black smoke is prolly just the cold weather, since your sucking in much denser air now...
