: Rear End!!!
BlueBurby1 12-05-2008, 01:00 PM blew my diff today, at least thats the thought for now, gonna open the cover and find out. N-D drop and big bang. i still get driveshaft movement when the tranny is in gear, and to put in park you herar the park pawl jumping until it can stop the tranny spinning up, so i'm pretty sure rear end decided it didn't want to live anymore.
so anybody ever done a rear end swap on one of these?
bbbadboy 12-05-2008, 01:28 PM They're not too bad, just make sure you soak the bolts down with penetrating spray the day before. Also, if swapping the whole rear-end, would be a good time to step up to the full floater diff. Some of the wrecking yards will tell you that the old ff diff (mid to late '70s) won't fit, but they do.
I wouldn't try swapping the springs with the diff, that can be a major pita. Haven't had one yet where the front spring bolts weren't seized in the spring bushing.
BlueBurby1 12-05-2008, 04:22 PM well i've checked the damaged...shattered the carrier gears, the rest of the internals look fine, worn but fine. i think a clean and rebuild with a new(or used) carrier might do the trick, and i wouldn't have to dick around with pinion preload and shit
Jodean 12-05-2008, 06:40 PM usually you can just replace the spiders......thats what the jeep guys do, clean it up and put it back together, go another 100k
mattthebrat 12-05-2008, 08:00 PM Thats what you get for doing a neutral drop, nothing good ever comes out of those:D
I would do what bbbadboy said, and plop a FF in it, the time is always right for upgrades!
Diaric 12-05-2008, 09:39 PM i'd just fix it as it is. unless you don't mind swapping over to 8 bolt rims and tires, and changing over the front end to match. should be able to grab a carrier easy enough at a u pull yard.
BlueBurby1 12-06-2008, 12:49 AM i have an astro donor vehicle, i'm hoping it all measures out the same, and i can straight swap and then spend time trying to plop a new spider in...i'll post pics of the damage
Joshthemule 12-06-2008, 07:56 AM go over to pirate4x4.com and post a thread. You should get some pretty good responses there.
the_other_matt 12-06-2008, 01:13 PM go over to pirate4x4.com and post a thread. You should get some pretty good responses there.
yeah, lots of responses there:
300 people would say "search noob!"
200 people would verbally assualt him
100 would question his sexuality
50 would say buy a ford
50 would find photos of him and his family and photochop them
5 would answer the question
pirate is not the place to ask questions, it is the place to search through someone else's responses for the 5 good posts...

That's what you get for tryin to show off, then you get left with the tow and repair bill , and have to suck your best friend in to help.
And I didn't even get to see the carnage.... Asshole!
:D:rolleyes: You'll learn someday to just man up and buy a 6.5 in a GMT400 :p:
83DetroitDiesel 12-07-2008, 02:19 AM I downshifted into 3rd at 55-60 mph and stripped 3 teeth off of the ring gear in my semi-floater 14-bolt. I got a full floater in it now. Even though the gov lok doesn't work it's better than what i had.
87burb 12-08-2008, 08:40 AM here is how I fixed my gov lock (just for farm use) until I get my 4:10 8 lug axles in...

BlueBurby1 12-11-2008, 07:37 AM lol, you do what works when you need something, but i'll give you a warning, and you may already know this, don't crank on the power with that thing especially if you decide to do a turn on solid ground, you may just twist an axle off and get to watch your wheel pass you.
thats less a warning to anyone in particular as it is to all the newbies out there going...sweet man i wanna lock my diff...hehehe....and then they come back here and say but but but 87 burb did it....
