They are gret grocery getters, how many miles? Timing belts are primary concern, check millage req onbelt change.Oil must stay with vw505 spec's.These critters use a vnt type turbocharger, don't lug the engine(drive it like you stole it!).I own a 03 jetta 140 thousand on the OD.Canged the timing belt @ 80 thousand.Standards get better millage than the auto, but clutch change costs will about e-quill out.Check out: www.tdiclub.com

Nice first post.
Airhead is right on. I've researched them for about the last year and just bought a (new to me) '06 package 2. This is the only new body style, old (prior to 2007 emissions standards) diesel. I wanted this specific car to run B100. So far it's a great car. Now I'm just looking at my options to add more power via tuning. It's been getting me an average of 44 miles per gallon since I got it. I'm running the first full tank of bio through it now. So far no problems. Good little car. The forum listed above is a good reference for these diesel cars.

Get a manual and keep it away from the dealer.

They require maintenance and it is not always cheap or easy.

Stock 5 speed clutch will not hold a lot of extra power, in case you were wondering.

Disable the EGR and check for intake manifold clogging. Make sure the turbo vanes are not solidified.

The special oil is for the 03+, 02- can run regular DINO oil in them from my research. In 01 the timing belts were improved to the 120K mile timing belts, but prior to then they had a 70K mile belt on them. From what I have read the timing belt is the major concern on them stock.

We have 2 of them and I would buy another if I came across a good deal. Just make sure you have a fresh timing belt and your good to go for a few miles. I love 'em!
