For those of you who have had head gaskets replaced what is the dealer charging you? The dealer i took it to told me that i had two choices $5000 to replace the head gaskets or $11,000 for a new motor.

They told me $4000 to do the headgaskets, but I found a local shop that did it for $2550 and that included ARP headstuds.

The dealers are getting $100+ an hour and I think the book has it down as a 40 hour job. Plus parts.

People can do it quicker but the dealer goes by the book.

Book says 36 hours. Local dealer here charge 4800......

Dont know where you are but there are qualified shops out there to do it for way less, and as stated above, with better studs.

$11,000 sounds like a good deal-- but I bet that does not include labor for the install. However you could sell the old motor for a good price.

11,000 a good deal on a new motor??!????????

You can buy them all day for 4-5 grand on ebay. Many times you can even get them cheaper.

I'm with duratothemax....fleabay has them for $4-5k. Also, I'd strongly consider finding out what it would take to convert my LB7 (and wiring+ecu) over to an LLY or LBZ that doesn't have the injector issues.

Why spend $3k on injectors + $$$$ for cp3 pump + $$$$ for headgaskets when you can get a complete motor with fewer issues for less???

Ya Ben can we convert our LB7 trucks to LLY, LBZ or LMM motors ?? Minus the DPF and Converters of course :D

Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, any 03-04 LB7 can be fairly easilly converted to an LLY. You'll need LLY heads, ECM, injectors, top end fuel lines etc, and wiring harness.

So if you can find a complete engine with the ecm you can do the swap, no wiring issues ??

How about LBZ, I think I saw a brand new, still on the factory pallet engine for $9,000, but I guess that would be minus ECM and wiring harness, so that sucks.

DD If you do an LBZ you'll also have to upgrade to the 6-speed allison.
