: Anyone having extensive wear on their front tires?
nrgreen 03-25-2005, 12:27 PM Hi Everyone, I am hoping that some of you will add in to this message.
Does anyone have a 3500 or 2500, specifically a dually that is wearing front tires out like crazy! I have been through 4 sets in 18k miles. Is anyone else having this same problem? The tires are cupping severly across the tread and wearing on the inside. I can see severe cupping in 1500 miles or so.
My truck has been in the shop 5 times and now they tell me it is aggressive driving. That's a bunch of bull! I usually carry my 2 babies around in the truck, I don't drive aggressively.
Anyway, i am trying to find out how many other people are having a similiar problem with their GMC. Obviously, I have already been through the alignment, balancing, etc. Thanks!
Idle_Chatter 03-25-2005, 12:50 PM Are you using the recommended tire pressure of 45 psig? I found that my fronts were "eaten alive" at that pressure. It really ticked me off that the manufacturer would recommend a pressure for "ride comfort" that literally *DESTROYS* the tires and their effective service life. I'm on my second set of tires since new and after changing the front tire pressure to 55 psig I had the rears wear out first!
briano 03-25-2005, 01:01 PM that is crazy.. you have not adjusted the torsion bars at all either??

I'm on my second set of tires since new and after changing the front tire pressure to 55 psig I had the rears wear out first!I run 65lbs front and back loaded or unloaded. My tires @ 18000 + miles looks like they would get another 18000 miles before needing to be replaced. There is no cupping and the tread is square and flat across the entire footprint. I am happy with the wear pattern. However, I rotated them @ 10000 miles, another two thousand and the fronts will go back to the rear again.
:blahblah:
nrgreen 03-25-2005, 04:27 PM I haven't touched the torsion bars, I am running 60psi but have tried 45, 50, 60 and 75 all pressures are still cupping. This wear is only on the front tires. Rear tires are perfect. Front tires cup in 1500 miles and have been replaced 4 times in 18k miles.
I am getting ready to contact an attorney and go for the "Lemon Law." I am looking for others with the same problem, maybe time for class action lawsuit against GMC.
sideswiper 03-25-2005, 05:13 PM i had this problem with my 3500 and took it in they could find no problems, but i knew it was bad shocks.being a front end man for several years but was hoping they would replace them for free,no luck. bought a set of rancho rsx 9000 and problem solved
BlueOx03 03-25-2005, 08:44 PM My back tires keep wearing out very fast! I'm not sure why....
Got Juice? 03-25-2005, 08:46 PM 65 PSIG on all 4 corners on 235-85-16's
Toyo M-55 or LTX MS or LTX AT's
No tire wear problems in the front.
The rear on the other hand....
chevmeister 03-25-2005, 09:44 PM Does anyone have a 3500 or 2500, specifically a dually that is wearing front tires out like crazy! i did and i fixed it but everyone that seen it says i did it wrong
i went with 265/75-16 up front and 235/85-16 in the rear. tires are almost exact same diameter. crank the front end up till the front axles are straight and bingo no more wear
nrgreen 03-25-2005, 10:28 PM I have heard about people crankin up the torsion bars all the way up and placing bilsteins on. They said it fixed it. Dealer is saying that they will buy me a set of KYB shocks. I have never heard of KYB, anyone have any word on these? Also I hear this problem is very specific to dually trucks. Anyone with a dually have any insight on this problem?
Thanks for the input chevmeister, I am going to give it a try with the torsion bars, did you replace shocks too? I have the sames size tires as you. BTW, why did everyone say that was wrong?
chevmeister 03-26-2005, 09:17 AM yeah i put bilsteins on as well almost forgot about that. everyone says its wrong casue im running two diferent size tires on a 3500.
TheBac 03-26-2005, 11:12 AM My back tires keep wearing out very fast! I'm not sure why....
I second that!
mrmagu 03-26-2005, 02:48 PM Only time I notice my front tires wear excessively is right after they are rotated
cdlinstr 03-26-2005, 02:55 PM The tire pressure sticker in the door jam on my 05 3500 dually 215x85x16 reads
front 70
rear 65
spare 80
DEWFPO 03-26-2005, 05:20 PM yeah i put bilsteins on as well almost forgot about that. everyone says its wrong casue im running two diferent size tires on a 3500.
As long as the tire diameters are the same front to rear it is NOT a problem.

Idle_Chatter 03-26-2005, 06:07 PM The tire pressure sticker in the door jam on my 05 3500 dually 215x85x16 reads
front 70
rear 65
spare 80
Mine reads 245x75x16
Frt 55
Rr 80
(no listing on the spare)
If you don't run 60 to 65 in the fronts, they get eaten up
If you run 80 in the rear unloaded, they crown and center wear really fast
60 to 65 all around is the best I've found for my truck.
nrgreen 03-28-2005, 04:06 PM hey chevmeister, do you know the model number or type of bilsteins by chance?
chevmeister 03-28-2005, 05:37 PM not exactaly sure i bought them from John Kennedy www.kennedydiesel.com. he can tell you part #s for sure. or pm him on the forum he goes by kennedy i believe.
nrgreen 03-28-2005, 06:51 PM ok, one more question chevmeister...what type of tires are you running, i got the size earlier, but what is the type? Thanks for the info!
chevmeister 03-28-2005, 08:21 PM BF Goodrich A/T KO
265/75-16 LR D front
235/85-16 LR E rear
im also running Alcoa Hot Shot rims, dont think that made any difference, cept the bling bling, but I did it all at the same time
nrgreen 03-28-2005, 10:44 PM Thanks chevmaister! That is exactly what I am running. I also have the alcoas and the BFG A/Ts! The reason that I have been asking is because I have been using you as an example with the dealer. I am finding that I have to lead the way on fixing this truck. I told them that I am puttong on the Bilsteins, new front tires and I want the torsion bars turned up so that the axles are straight.
The last thing they wanted to know was what type of tires you had on. This is good news that you have the same ones as me! Thanks again!
rolloffhill 03-28-2005, 10:47 PM I don't think tire pressure on the door matters go by the rating on the tire. I have an '02 3500 drw (M#10 {see sig}), I ran my stock 215 GY's for 80,000 miles. Never had front tire problems at all. Just gotta rotate. You may have issues in your front end.
rolloffhill 03-28-2005, 10:57 PM Hey chevmeister and nrgreen,
what is the reasoning for running the 265/75's on the front, is it for wider stance, more aggressive tire or just looks? How many miles are you getting out of your tires when you can't rotate them due to size diff's.
nrgreen 03-29-2005, 11:35 AM Actually, I misread and mispoke, I have the 265/75s all the way around. I will have to let chevmeister answer that one. I did however try that at one time and it did give a wider stance and looked good, but in the process of trying to fix this front end problem and going through 4 sets of tires, I went back to all the same size tires.
Goldneye 03-30-2005, 05:08 PM (Quote) Dealer is saying that they will buy me a set of KYB shocks. I have never heard of KYB, anyone have any word on these?
I have KYB shocks on my BAJA bug, but that does not mean I would put them on my truck. I thought the stock shocks were bilsteins?
chevmeister 03-30-2005, 07:42 PM rolloffhill i did it mostly for stability and to try to float that heavy front end. not to mention it looks DAMN FINE
nrgreen 03-31-2005, 05:14 PM Hey Goldeneye,
I haven't heard that before. Anyone know? Are the stock shocks bilsteins? If they are they are really really cheap bilsteins manufactured specifically for GM or something.
coyotekid 03-31-2005, 05:23 PM My fronts seem to be wearing nicely except for some slight cupping due to inadequate rotation.
Now my rear tires on the other hand...!
rolloffhill 03-31-2005, 11:10 PM In your spare time lets see a pic of that DAMN FINE truck. Or direct me where I can see it. Thanks.
