Well I thought I'd take my truck to my favorite stealership for it's first oil change, wow that was a mistake, the want $135 just for oil, filter, and chassis lube........am I the only one who thinks that's ridiculous? I called the dealer where I bought the truck and they want $120, so it's not just the one shop.

Now I'm stuck, I wanted to get the oil done so I'd have the paperwork on it for warranty, but I don't trust the guys at the little lube place down the street cause they do stupid things like forget to put the oil filler cap back on or strip the oil pan plug threads.

Is this what it costs everybody?

~$10 per gal for Shell Rotella-T 15W40 x 2.5 gal (10 qt.) = $25 for the oil
~$7 for the AC Delco filter
~$8 each for the Allison spin-on (I change it at every oil change)

So I guess when I do it myself, it costs me less right around $40.

I just keep the receipts and log what I changed, mileage, date, etc. and figured that would be sufficient. It had better.

The only thing I keep thinking is: I guess I tank of fuel costs $80 now instead of $120 with cheaper fuel, so I guess I should just look at it as another fill up.
I asked if they used Delco filters and they said yes, then he muttered something about using Delvac and that it was synthetic?

So the dealer is automatically using synthetic? That's not what comes in them from the factory is it?

While we were fulltiming it in the RV I was paying the local dealer about $75. Now that I have a garage again and use of my tools, its back to DIY...

Why Dont You Change Your Own Oil & Filter And Lube The Chassis Yourself, The Same Principals Apply If You Had A Gasser The Heel With The Stealership

FREE for life in Canada that's a racket. I got a year anyways.

Don't forget to change out the Allison spin-on, clean and re-install tranny spin-on fliter magnet at first service (GM requirement).

I am going to change my Allison filter soon, dealer did it last time, dying to see if they remembered to take the magnet off the old filter. I've had a couple of dealers throw them away...

What's the best way to DIY without a lift ? What do you drain 3 gallons of oil into ??

I use ramps - great time to use 4x4 low crawling up on the ramps. Fumoto valve great to be able to stop draining - 3/4 filling dishpan twice and dumping into 5 gallon can for waste oil.

Not sure if I could reach all 11 zerks without raising the beast on ramps. Just motor or tranny oil change sure no problemo.

Has anyone posted some pics for a newbee? I haven't changed oil on one of these and don't want to screw it up.

Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and let the dealer do the first one, need to go ahead and pick up an tranny spin on tomorrow. I had my oil changed in my last truck(gasser) til 36k, then switched to synthetic and did it myself til I traded the truck on this one. The jury's still out on what I'll do for the next one. My buddy bought a 6.7 when I bought my truck and his dealer does his for $65, which I think is reasonable.

Turns out first service advisor was wrong about the Delvac, it was Delo that they put in. I've heard conflicting stories about when to switch to synthetic, some say you should wait until after the break in(15-20k), but a guy I talked to who works for Metro here in town said it doesn't matter. Either way I have to decide on which synthetic I want to go to, and I think I'm set on Delco filters for oil and fuel, at least til I get a secondary fuel filter.

My first oil change with trans filter change cost $109.50. (I provided the oil).

The dealer charged $17.48 for the engine oil filter, $41.67 for the Allison filter and $15.48 for the trans fluid.
