Whats the difference between the steering gear boxes on a 1500 series verses a 2500 series? I think mines gonna need replacing at some point. The front suspension is sloppy. Im sure there are other worn parts too but i'll just replace it all. From the pics, both boxes are the same. But they have different part numbers. The parts store says one box is for the 7200GVWR (1500 series) while the other box is for an 8600# gvwr. My truck actually has a 7700# GVWR. Its labeled 2500, has 8 lug wheels, 2500 series brakes, but the title and vin and dealers window stickers all say it is a 1500. Also has the 1500 series gears and rear end. So my truck is sort of an oddball. Hard to say what it really has gear box wise. I need to figure out what steering/suspension it has under it so i know what tie rods and ball joints to order when i get ready to work on that. Soooo much work to do on this truck. Needs shocks too lol. Its worth it tho, pretty unique.

I'm not shure of the different boxes but the boxes are pretty bullet proof. A small amount of slop in the pittman arm will cause alot of wandering especially if other componants are wore. The pittman arm is a pain in the ass to replace. The steering box has to be taken loose to get it off. A good puller is required to remove the arm. The rubber bushings also get sloppy. If you replace them with poly bushings you will never have to do it again. There are kits available with all the moving components that save alot over buying indevidule pieces. I don't recomend the place in arizona[performance suspension components] where i got my kit from they sent the wrong lower ball joints twice and the quality of the other pieces was not the best[chinese mcqay-norris]. Napa premium pieces are very good. I think they are moog parts.Performance suspension technology in new jersy or summit racing would be a good choice.

I take it that both boxes are for 6.5. I had replaced a steering box in a gasser years ago from 2500 to 1500 it didn’t work the line fittings were different. I would check that the fitting are the same on both. And that they/it is for hydroboost.

I believe it has to do with the gearing inside and valving. Make sure also that they get it right for a hydro-boost brake system as sometimes that changes which box you need. If all else fails, call GM with your VIN number and get the factory part number for your box and then cross-reference it to the aftermarket.
